What gear oil is best for the tranny?
I put Redline 75w90 gear oil in my 02 WRX tranny. I am getting the same 1st gear grindage as many others. Does anyone have any recomendations for gear oil or additives that might help this poorly engineered tranny?
Add about 1 qt. of pennzoil synchromesh after draining a qt. It will definately make your shifts a lot smoother..... there is a discussion about :

Do give the synchromesh a try. It really smoothed out the operation of my trans(with Valvoline 75W90). 1 to 1-2 qt mixed with Valvoline/Castrol dyno gear oil seems to be a great blend. It appears that the slicker synthetic oils (and lighter 75W90) negatively impact synchro operation for our cars...
Brent.
PS: AutoZone seems to be the cheapest place for the Pennzoil Synchromesh(~$4/qt). Otherwise, check out your local GM dealer(~$10/qt).

AmsOil/Swepco
I'm new to Subaru but I've used Amsoil and Swepco 90 weight gear oil in VWs, Audi quattros, and Porsches. I'm going to probably be putting Swepco in my '96 Outback when I pick it up and get it on a lift. I just purchased it today.

"NS" means it doesn't have the friction modifiers that regular Redline 75w90 has in it. The friction modifiers are for limited slip clutch-type differentials and don't work well in synchromesh transmissions. Redline 75w90NS is 100% synthetic oil.
