Transmission... or what?

Recently, my 1990 Legacy Sedan started tugging to the left while driving down the street. It wasn't a light tug, but an all out jerk to the left-had to use both hands to keep her straight-tug. After talking to many mechanics about it, none of which specialized in Subarus, they all came to the same conclusion... it's your CV Joint. Well, that was before. Yesterday, while driving home from the advanced auto place, my car tugged badly to the left only when I pressed the accelerator. So, bringing her home, I lifted the car, and examined everything.. the CV Joints look brand new. So, I jumped back in the car after lowering it, and started to go.
My car is a standard. After pressing in the clutch, putting it in first gear, and then going, the car didn't move.. It made an awful loud grinding sound, and my rpms shot to to the red-line @ 7000. The car stalled and died.
I can still start the car right now, but as for going, nothing happens. It just keeps making that grinding sound, and stays put. I can even let go of the clutch in first gear, and it doesn't stall the car either.
Is this a transmission gone wrong deal, or is it something else?
Any help would be perfect.
Thanks,
Mark
Ps. I do my own repairs, so guidance would be appreciated.

It's a 5MT, but it also sounds like it's FWD, not AWD. If this is the case, then i suspect that something in the front differential isn't working right, and is somehow sending more power to your left wheel than the right, if that's even possible.
When you jacked it up, you probably spun the wheels, and may have changed something in the differential and/or transmission in the process. This probably explains why it doesn't do anything. I'm no transmission expert, mind you, just doing some deductive reasoning.
Sounds like you're going to need to replace it.

Well, it was my clutch causing all the problems.. found this out when I took apart the front end of my car. Anyways, are clutches for professionals, or would I be able to do it myself with the help of a repair manual?
I hope I can do it, seeing as it's a 6 hour job, at $70/hr....

It depends on your level of confidence, and the tools you have. If it's indeed a FWD car, then you don't have to worry about messing with the rear driveshaft, but you still have to get the transmission out of the way, and that can be a pretty big task.
I'd recommend going over the procedure in the manual and decide afterwards.

To be honest, i wouldn't replace the flywheel unless it's damaged. Flywheels aren't cheap, and while a light flywheel would be nice, it may be a bit much. That is something you have to decide for yourself. As for the CV axles, if you're planning on keeping the car around for a while, it's not a bad idea to do them. Refurbished axles should be readily available.

Still angry...
New clutch and this bad boy still will not move.
Also.. if the car states AWD.. then why does just my rear tires move when you push the gas while the car is lifted up?
I need help bad on this subaru.. I'm starting to hate them after my 3rd one.

It was my belief that it wasn't the clutch to start with. Something has been damaged between the transmission and the differential that's probably going to require a rebuild or replacement.
I don't think i've ever heard of anyone breaking the differential in an N/A Legacy...this is very unusual.

That's very possible, unfortunately. Fortunate for you, early 5MT AWD cable trannies aren't that expensive, but they might be a little uncommon. Replacement is very similar to what would be done in replacing the clutch, but removing and installing a new tranny.
It sucks, but there you have it.
