Trans Problems with my 96 AWD AT
Well, I just picked up my second Legacy saturday (from an auction). My first Legacy had non-functional AWD, this AWD works but ive got some serious problems here.
1) Reverse does not engage at all
2) From a stop, up to 30mph, the car has a strong shudder from underneath and trouble shifting into second without slipping a little. It almost feels as if its coming from the rear but I doubt it. Once you get going up to around 35-40, it acts normally.
the car does have 167k, so it would be safe to say the trans is on the way out im guessing. I wish the bastards at the auction had put that on the windshield like they are supposed to. What direction do you think I should go with this issue? New trans? Rebuild? I only paid $1500 for the car, and the body and engine are in excellent shape. If I can get back what I paid ill probably go that route. Just looking for some input.. thanks

That is a lot of miles for a subie automatic. I'd like to blame it on torque-bind, but if you can't shift into reverse, it sounds like something more serious.
Either get it rebuilt or consider a swap. Both are expensive, but considering what you paid for the car, it still sounds like a good deal.

shifting
well since you have no reverse it is most likely going to be a big tear down.line pressure testing is needed to diagnois.but you can also put the fuse in the holder to run as fwd to see if the shudder problem goes away.sounds like you have a rolled seal on a clutch piston.
