Tranny/case flex question
Ok here's the deal I have been on this board for a while and have been doing my homework as to whether or not I should get a WRX. Now I have read that the tranny in the WRX tends to be the weak spot. I have also read on another thread that it is not so much bad gears as it is case flex. If this is the case is there any way to stop the flex. Or do you have to drop $3000+/- for better gears. I love the cars looks and tuning potential however the possibility and frequency with which tranny problems seem to occur in this car make me very nervous. Please enlighten me as to any suggestions you have for better tranny/case strength.

It's not as bad as it sounds in this forum. As with anything, those with bad experiences make their voices heard MUCH more than those with good ones. If you don't go crazy with power mods, and treat your car like you want it to last, you're unlikely to have major problems.

obviously those with bad experiences will made their voice heard. But it seems like even people who are driving them like they are meant to be driven are having just as much problems as those driving them hard. I mean I want to be able to drop the clutch every once and a while and not worry. Is there no other solution besides a dogbox.

impreza-rs.com offers Chalek tranny gears that can take up to 450hp. They aren't dogboxes, they have synchros wich means you can pretty much do anything with them and they are easy to drive. I was considering buying these and a new tranny housing and building it myself, it would MUCH cheaper but may take a while to install.

A simple brace still won't cure the major problem which is the entire M/T design. $3K is about right for the better gears since it would be gears 1-3 and the entire shaft for the input shaft since the first set of teeth are build into the shaft. You can either source the 6spd, the STI 5spd or do the Chalek gear swap. There really is no cheap solution.

Well the problem with that is the dog box can be driven on the street but wasn't designed for it and from what I've heard the average driving is actually going to wear on the dog box which is why most people go with the gear sets that still use syncros.

oh....well um....ok. In that case I am guessing that the 5 speed with better gears is the way to go. From what I have read swapping in the 6speed looks like a pain in the @$$. If I remember right swapping the 6speed also includes swapping shifter mechanisms, drive shaft, axles, differential gears and a couple other things, right?
