"Case Flex"
"Case Flex"
Just curious what type of flex we're talking about in the 5MT WRXs. Is it the engine flexing in relation to the case? Is the case deforming under side load, i.e. hard cornering or hard launch? Curious.

Deforming of the gearbox case under high torque loads, especially in lower gears. Causes misalignment of gears and synchros, resulting in the vast majority of major transmiision problems in Subarus.

As far as I know, it's only measured by the large number of stripped gears and chewed up synchros from dropping the clutch.
I couldn't tell you how it was proved, but it's the cause of Subaru's problems mostly. Comparing the 6MT case to the 5MT case (Imprezer has posted pics of both side-by-side) helps support this theory.

The gears sizing has been improved in the 6spd along with STI adding a bearing closer to the front of the case where on the 5spd there is only a rubber oil seal. Friends in Japan have broken even the STI 5spds but so far I have heard nothing but good things about the STI 6spd. Of course its the first new M/T design that Subaru has come out with in a couple decades.

It's possible to weld up a kind of bracing for it. Sort of like how Top Fuel motors have straps holding the blowers on. Nate at S-Squared is considering this.
