rebuild by a private company may be a less expensive option.

Just curious... But you knew going in there with a boost controller would do that right? I have heard some dealers are cool with intake / exaust but never a boost controller as far as I have heard. Tough break though.. good luck with the new one...

Yep, boost controllers are almost always going to void your powertrain coverage. As for getting the new gearbox, I would highly recommennd going the extra mile to get a 6MT. Gearsets aren't really the answer in a WRX, as the real weakness is case flex. It's far more important to learn how to take care of a powerful AWD gearbox. Unless you get the 6 speed, which so far seem damn near indestructible.

Relative to a used WRX gearbox, yes. Relative to a hardened gearset or dogbox, not really. But given it's near indestructible design, the nice short, close ratios with decent freeway 6th gear, it's well worth it, especially given the likelihood that if you broke one WRX gearbox, you'll beak more.

Auto warranties CANNOT be voided. Get that word out of your head. If the dealer or the SOA rep used the word "voided", you should file complaints against them with BBB, FTC, and your state's attorney general.
They can only deny individual claims on a case-by-case basis. No more.

I agree with Ban, go the extra mile and buy a STi 6MT... you will be much happier in the long run.'
Cheers
