Unhappy standard transmission failure? anyone?

Drive a standard 99 Subaru outback while at school, had knocking sound from rear tellhouse that turned into a rough vibration before engaging. Stalled out and wont engage at all now! Started a month ago, now I am stranded.

Had it looked at, it is the transmission but do not know what specifically. Car has 204k, a rebuilt engine, new headers, water pump, clutch is fine. This isnt another head gasket defect sort of thing is it?

I may need a whole new transmission I am told, sounds expensive and out of the question. If that is the case, does anyone know where to get one cheap or used?

This car has been nothing but trouble since I have owned it. Any info will help guys, I want to be prepared when I talk to the mechanic. Thanks,

It sounds like the center differential may have given up on you.

Will the car roll if it's in neutral?
