speedometer connection
my speedo cable is on the fritz and i thought i'd check around to see:
a) if the impreza got an electronic instead of mechanical speedo sometime before 2001
b) if it showed up in more recent imprezas,
c) if the impreza didn't get it, what legacy years/models had the electronic speedo,
d) if those speedos were 120mph, 140mph, or what, and
e) can i put any of those speedos in my 96 impreza L, both physically and electronically?
specifically, does the electronic sending unit or speed sensor or VSS or whatever it's called fit into the same threaded hole in the transmission as the mechanical cable end fits into?
(the other question of whether it would be compatible with the computer or if there's a VSS buffer in the electornic speedo or what is a little less transmission-related, i suppose, but the answer would be equally appreciated
)

purely from what i've heard from somebody else.....
if you have a mechanical drive speedo it is very easy to swap over to the new Wrx style. This was done using a tranny that came out of a mid-late 90's JDM car of some sort that had a beefier tranny than a wrx. You need to swap out the tail section of the tranny(the part that has the hole in it for the sending unit.) or this is what i think i was told. either that or it does just drop into the hole, i have a horrible memory, look at your tranny and see if the part with the sending unit is removable.
