Short shifter noise

I just got the short shifter installed and along with it the STi metal shift **** by the dealer on my 2004 WRX. Now when it is left in 3rd or 4th gear at above 3,200 rpms, the shifter rattles like an old wind up alarm clock. If I sway the shifter side to side the noise goes away. Trust me I am not being nit picky, it is loud!
I went back to the dealer and told them about it. They then had a nice salesman ride with me and he heard it as well. The service manager told me to drive it for 2 days and then bring it back, because it might need to be broken in? I spoke to the mechanic and he was a jerk and had nothing to say to me about this matter. I was basically blown off.
By the time I got home from that, I was about to punch someone or something. The car has 276 miles total on it. If I had known the service was this bad, I would have bought the car somewhere else.
Anyone think I am nuts? Has anyone here had similar problems with the short shifter. Other than the noise, it shifts good.

That shouldn't be at all (like I'm telling you something) and what the heck does he mean broken in? It's a shifter not a motor there is no need to break it in. Something might fall off and stop ratteling more likely. The STi shifter is the whole shifter assembly something is either too loose where it's supposed to be tight (bolts or nuts) or too tight where it's supposed to be looser (bushing area).
this here is a KB SS but it's got the same bolt and nut. This may be loose or too tight. something to check by putting your hand over the boot on the bolt to see if it stops making the noise:
Here is a scan of the system:
As you can see there are a few places that can be loose.
Here is a shot of the whole thing they swapped out:
I bet it's a bolt that goes through the end of the rod at the right of the assembly. I'd be afraid a bolt will fall out and you won't be able to shift.

My shifter rattles in 3rd and 4th gear now... I'm pretty sure it's because I bent the shift fork and/or linkage slightly hanging onto the shifter in hard corners before I got my harness. Since you just got yours installed, however, it's very possible you simply have a misaligned part or two.

I installed this exact shifter in my car. It's very hard to mess up the installation as it is a direct bolt in for the shifter you have. Mine works great, A little more noise through the shifter, but nothing like what you describe. My guess is they left out a mounting bolt or forgot to tighten one down (several are a PIA to get to, but easily doable). There was no "break in" and it is a direct replacement part for what you had (no new bolts to put in, etc.). The shifter comes assembled and slides right in if you take out the center console. There is no reason they should have taken the linkage on the shifting mechanism apart. Other possibilities: They installed a short shift kit for another model car (wrong part number), they used a cheaper aftermarket shift kit (although even these do not seem to have your problems), they used way too much force and somehow bent the linkage/fork into the transmission (like by hiting it with a hammer)
IMHO if I can do this on my back in my garage on a Sunday in an hour or two (I did it in about double the "shop time" the dealer uses) without a lift and not mess it up then a trained monkey should be able to do this without messing it up in an equiped shop. I would look at other options for service.
