Need Transfer Case
I took my 97 Subaru Legacy to the dealership the other day to find that my transfer case needs to be replaced. To "fix" the problem the dealership installed a Front Wheel Drive fuse thats on the firewall on the passenger side. I prefer to have my AWD back so if anyone can tell me where to affordably get a transfer case I would greatly appreciate it.
I've seen where some people choose to disable the AWD by putting in this fuse and was also wondering what the advantages might be by doing that..
Thank you for your help.

I'm not positive about the Legacy's, but on the WRX, the viscous coupling is unique to the 5 speed manual tranny and is a mechanical device. The automatic transmission has an electronic center differential, which is different. I'm fairly certain your car has some version of the electronic type, by virtue of the fact that you can put a fuse in to make your car front wheel drive. However, I do not konw if you can swap an Impreza center diff, with a Legacy center diff. I'd *guess* they are the same, but that is only a guess.
Good luck on your quest! I know there aren't many junk yards left in my area, but perhaps you have some near you?

Just spoke to Patrick at Subaru of Dallas (He's the man!) anyway he said most likely all I need is the clutch pack in the center diff. He said this is a common problem and the part is only $150 !!! AWESOME !!! Now I just need to find someone in the Dallas area thats willing to work for as much beer as they can drink and a little cash because I dont know crap about working on cars. (This is pretty obvious right) plus I just had reconstructive shoulder surgery last month so I'm still gimpy..
Any volunteers in the DFW area? Please ??

Hmm.. Just called a transmission shop in Frisco and they refused to do it because they wont use outside parts (even though they are from Subaru) and they won't only replace the clutch pack, they have to perform their own analysis and replace parts accordingly. He said if I wanted to be cheap about it to go to a different place.
How rude...
anyone out there have a spare few hours?

your man is wrong in dallas.the teflon seals on the coupler groove the transfer clutch case.when you take the case cover off, check to see if they have grooved the inside.if not than you are good.more tomes than not it has.you will then need to measure the thickness of the transfer clutch end plate to get the right clutch pack from subaru.also you will have to inspect the drum where the cltch packs ride on.agian more times then not it has grooved the drum.i have been able to file the groove smooth and been able to save the drum.if not the drum will have to be replaced and the front pinion depth will have to be reset meaning a complete tear down.the transfer clutch case can be pulled apart without the trans being pulled out.fix the car right and it will only have to be done once.
