Car Info: 02 WRX wagon=dead; rollin' in a Craptastic Camry!
I'm not positive about the Legacy's, but on the WRX, the viscous coupling is unique to the 5 speed manual tranny and is a mechanical device. The automatic transmission has an electronic center differential, which is different. I'm fairly certain your car has some version of the electronic type, by virtue of the fact that you can put a fuse in to make your car front wheel drive. However, I do not konw if you can swap an Impreza center diff, with a Legacy center diff. I'd *guess* they are the same, but that is only a guess.

Good luck on your quest! I know there aren't many junk yards left in my area, but perhaps you have some near you?

your man is wrong in dallas.the teflon seals on the coupler groove the transfer clutch case.when you take the case cover off, check to see if they have grooved the inside.if not than you are good.more tomes than not it has.you will then need to measure the thickness of the transfer clutch end plate to get the right clutch pack from subaru.also you will have to inspect the drum where the cltch packs ride on.agian more times then not it has grooved the drum.i have been able to file the groove smooth and been able to save the drum.if not the drum will have to be replaced and the front pinion depth will have to be reset meaning a complete tear down.the transfer clutch case can be pulled apart without the trans being pulled out.fix the car right and it will only have to be done once.
