Drivetrain...

Does anyone know where I can get a better drivetrain for my 05 WRX?
I'm getting ready to do alot of mods to the motor, and I'm going to need to get a different drivetrain...

Thanks for any information

If you're considering a drivetrain swap in a WRX, just trade it in for an STi. You will save time, money, effort, and hassle. The only reason to consider a swap of any kind is because you're simply too attached to the car you already have to be willing to give it up.

Well I plan on going for atleast 400hp out of it, and I was told that the one of the weakness' on the WRX was the drivetrain..
I also thought of getting one off of a totalled STI or sumthing, but I wasn't sure how much one would cost..

The '05+ 5 speeds are pretty strong, though not nearly as good as the 6 speed. However, the cost of adding a non-DCCD 6MT to your WRX is more than the cost of just trading it in, which gives you the bonus of Brembos, more power capability, the BBS, etc. Plus, getting financing on an STi is easier than on a transmission swap.

I've heard from Subaru tech's that the STi motor fails under anything over stock power. The motor is already pushed to it's limits. Imprezer says he is going for 400hp, this may not be a realiable possibility for the STi.

nope, you can do a bunch of mods and still rock the show, just not HUUUGE turbo haha... i think the stock STi block can handle like 460 crank hp?? i mean factory wise its rated at only 300 crank hp, so that leaves you with that extra 160hp to add

The subaru techs you've heard from are IDIOTS, period....properly tuned a stock STi motor can handle 400whp daily...

Imprezer200, unless you drive like an idiot you're tranny will be fine. I've been running at well over 300whp on a stock '03 tranny for over a year w/ a upgraded clutch & flywheel which actually causes more tranny stress.

I will be running a built EJ207 w/ reworked JDM v8 heads w/ a TD06H-20G EWG, expecting over 375whp all on the stock tranny, I will find its limits...

My brother also worked for a Subaru dealer for a while and he was constantly seeing blown STi motors, and WRX transmissions. In Subaru's defense though, he did say that these cars commonly were modified and more than likely driven hard. I can’t make any claims of what a STi can handle personally, but I'm sure that Subaru has a solid product and that a majority of their known problems are driver related.

yeah i remember when everyone was blowin STi motors too, it was when they first came out, and nubfaces would just go buy a boost controller and crank it up on their own and didnt know what dyno tuning was... i blame them for the demise of their own cars

STi blocks will handle alot of power as long as its safe power

gruppe-s even says the STi block will handle safely like 460hp !
