All Subaru's have notchy shifters when cold. Usually gets smoother when the car gets warm. Also, you can get a kartboy shifter and it should really shorten your shifting.

Welcome to i-Club. Hopefully some STi owners can provide feedback to your question on whether that notchiness is normal for an STi.

The car you drove was brand new, and hasn't been broken in yet. After a few thousand shifts the shifts will be as smooth as butter.

thats how they are dude, my 05 is the same way, and i belong to imprezawrxsti.com and everyone there agrees it's normal (i was worried too). The nice thing is that holy **** only gets more holy as the motor breaks in. When u first start it and its colder u gotta use a lil gas to get it into second.....it gets better and especially when its warmed up. I liked that notchy feeling more than the warmer loose feeling (obvioulsy not the not getting into gear part but the notchiness during shifting). There is this bushing kit you can get that is suppose to make the shifter feel better than s2000 and make shifting amazingly pleasureable so I think im going to purchase the kit.
