Gear oil leak!

Hey everyone,

Looks like I may have a gear oil leak. Can't seem to find it around the bottom area. Checked the fluid level and it did show as mid level on the stick.

The car has never been launched so it seems weird that even without abuse, this thing maybe going.

It's an 03 with about 22K miles. Kartboy was installed about 2 months ago. Last checked before that without any signs of fluid loss. Here's a photo on where the fluid is ending up....

Any ideas where to look for possible leak?

My best guess would be the plug of the drain... though however unlikely it could be

here's a link to scoobymods with the gear oil change (membership to see pics)

It will show you the location of the plug.

The only other thing i could think of is the main bushings/seals that connect the axel and to the crank. If the the crank one leaked it should have caused slippaged and burning smells from the clutch. The rear should be obvious though when they go they go usually pretty good.

Good luck on finding the real leak

Thanks Roadspike. I did change the gear oil after the discovery and drove it to the Mt Hamilton meet. I checked the area again after and it showed a little more fluid so I think I will have to monitor this closely. I will be getting this thing checked out by MPJ hopefully this Saturday.

Thanks again!

Roadspike,

I did find a leak on teh tranny. Right on the area where it meets, there are some bubbling going on when the tranny is real hot. I don't know if they will cover this under warranty. I surely hope so. If not....

Did you recently change like two tires?

I believe the bubbles are just gear oil seeping out of a tiny, tiny opening. It's not quite the center diff area and I don't really drive like a maniac. I will try to see if I can tighten up the nuts in that area. I sure hope that works or I will have to get a GT

No tire changes by the way and all seem to be even wear wise. I might try some stop leak to stop it.

I suppose a vicious seal could be the issue but who really can tell without taking the tranny almost completely out

Oh an i thought you meant it was boiling.
