FWD Impreza Clutch/Flywheel Replacement

Hey guys, been searching around now for a few months without any real luck on a helms type manual or any write-up for the FWD guys for a clutch and flywheel replacement. I have found a Exedy OEM replacement clutch kid for around 165-180 shipped, and the OEM flywheel from subaru stores online for around 220-250 shipped. Now I plan on ordering this next week, but having the parts without any type of specifications (aka torque specs) is useless. If any of you guys have any type of experience with the fwd tranny, and wannna share please do.

I have done a clutch kit in a honda before, so I would assume the procedure is nearly identical.....

pop the starter
drain transmission oil
remove axles
unbolt shifter linkage
unclip all sensors and mark placement
unbolt tranny to motor
jack up tranny to remove tranny mount
drop tranny
unbolt flywheel from motor
swap out clutch
button everything back up

Now sounds great, but I didnt know if subaru's had any type of special clips in the linkage like honda's, or in general anything special, or something that should be noted so I dont tear the care down, then kick myself in the butt cause I dont have everything I need.

Thanks for any and all help, I hope I was as specific as I needed to be with this problem. Winter is comming eventually up her in the northeast, and my subie needs a clutch bad before this time. Thanks again

Why not get a better flywheel if you're willing to spend $200-250 on a stock one? The ACT Streetlite flywheel is about the same price and should not cause you any problems. It weighs 13.9 pounds so it's very streetable. I'm running it in my WRX right now.

BTW, props to you for wanting to replace your own clutch and fly...I was too scared on mine...

yea, I am not afriad to get my hands dirty. I jut did the timing belt, radiator, and water pump on the car at the end of last winter, so I figure this is the next big issue that needs to be taken care of.

On the act flywheel, is there a FWD flywheel in production, I will have to look into it.

Good for you. I do most of my work, too, but when it came to rebuilding my tranny and replacing my clutch and flywheel, I just let a shop handle it. I don't have the proper setup here.

So I'm sure somebody carries the streetlite for your car. I just googled it but I don't have the model and year of your car. You could also call a good tranny shop, such as Gruppe-S, in the vendors section of this site, and they would probably have a lot of info concerning this.

I keep searchin, but find nothing but OEM flywheels. Not that its a big deal, but if I can find a lightened one for the same cost, I will def. choose that over oem

Bump for any more help please

should be able to use a AWD FW with FWD clutch but if you cant get http://www.clutchnet.com/ clutchnet to make you one for a AWD fw but with the 7/8" size

as for a clutch swap pull the motor and dont worry with the half shafts and trany because i could pull the motor in about 2 hours maybe a little less with a chain hoist just remember to disconnect the dogbone on the back of the motor or its hell putting in and taking out with it connected

From what I can tell, yanking the motor to swap out a clutch on an impreza is only beneficial if you have AWD. ..... thanks for the website and info so far

well shops do the trans in a suby but if you dont have a lift it is harder due to working under it like i said i find it easier because it takes me longer to remove two halfshafts than to pull the engine but let use know because most people without lifts pull the motor see how it goes

ahhhh, that def. makes more sence. Pulling the shafts usually the only pain in the butt portion is the castle nutes and cotter pins that rust out. I just dont have a step by step or a cherry picker to pull the motor to use that option.

Do you have any idea if there is anything special on a subie tranny that needs to be noticed or removed when pulling it. You should know if you pull the motor from the tranny, cause I am doing the same but in opposite for. I know honda's have weird little key pin thingy that needs to be pushed out of the linkage before pulling the tranny

Thanks

matt

the dogbone on the top of the tranny, roll pins in the halfshafts and the linkage is held on by a bolt and that is about it

yah thats what takes me so long is those damn cotter pins cause i find it a pain to get them out

Why are you going with the oem fly...Why not the lightened one off of ebay. It doesn't cost that much more??

BTW that's a killer deal on the Exedy clutch.

Yea exedy oem replacement for 165 off of clutch city online. I cant find anything aftermarket for the fwd subie. It would be nice if there were more options but i guess no one really wants to tune up a fwd scoob which is understandable.....just pipes me cause I dont wanna do any type of swap.....yet
