FINAL word on wrx tranny
ok so after all this talk about the crappiness of the wrx tranny and how it's like GLASS....
do you guys think the tranny is worth the 25k or however much you paid for the car? assuming that you don't drive the car too hard, but going fast off the line once in a while.

The transmission isn't really that bad, it's just that the loudest voices talking baout it had bad experiences. And, truth is, it doesn't take a lot of abuse to break one. But, with stock or not much more power, and reasonable care (meaning no clutch drops, powershifting, or hard launches) it's fine.

I agree with everything you said except "hard launches". This is a sports car and short of dropping the clutch, it "should" be able to handle it. The fact that it routinely doesn't worries me. Modded a VR6 Corrado and never once thought about the trans. Never needed to. Point is this, a car advertised sliding around corners and being driven hard in the commercials should stand up to a reasonable amount of abuse. Knock on wood, I haven't had any problems yet, but I'm only pushing 220 at the wheels my target is 290-300 whp. It's sad that one of my next mods has to be 2000 on a RA gear set.

In those commercials, it says in teeny tiny print 'do not try this at home' (or the highway, or logging roads, or Route 66, or...).
I don't know very many cars that allow you to double the wheel horsepower with no drivetrain mods. (Okay, I do, but none of those start with 165 or so at the wheels). 300 is not a reasonable expectation on stock gearboxes.
Lastly, just getting gearsets will only prolong the inevitable. Case flex is the problem, not weak gears.

Of course it's worth the 25K. There is no other car on the market that comes close to the WRX's price/performance balance. Yes, the transmission is a weak spot, but it is just fine for what it was designed for: a street car making stock power.
It is perfectly reasonable to expect a transmission to break when you are significantly increasing horsepower.
