Talking Driving the STI...

Hi, I'm NeoTrunks a former WRX driver turned STi Pilot. I have noted a few things I would like to clear up, being that this is my first STi. I have been noticing that the car "feels" like its fighting me(once in a while) while shifting into 3rd and sometimes 2nd, and I'm not only taking about when its cold. Feels like to clutch is not all the way in but the gear will go in. Is this normal? or should l take it in for a look. Would an upgraded trans mount help?

Also, I know Subaru "lightend" the car by removing sound denting material, but are there anything else they did? Like to rear shelf? Again, I know the car is noisey but I'm just trying to get used to what's "Normal" is and what could be a problem. Thanks.

BTW: 300 more miles to 1k

Doesn't get any better than the STi.

This car being noisy is normal from what I experience. At first, it kinda bothers me, but got used to it after a month of driving. It's a performance car, can't expect much unless you do add those sound deadning

When the clutch is not pushed in, but enough for a the gears to be set, then it will engage. But, rather not do that and step the clutch all the way in when shifting. Also, when it's cold, from my experience, it drives a little harder compare to when it's hot and been running for a while. For me, my car shifts and runs just fine when warmed up.

I have to agree that once the car is warm it does feel alot better, but still I have the clutch all the way down...anymore and I will be standing up. I trying different things to see what the car likes best. I got on it alittle more yesterday, feels similar to a C5 vet I drove once. I no idea this car had that much power for a boxer-4. I very happy with the car.

200miles left...

Agreed with above, the tranny feels like crap in the morning. Your car is like a woman; gotta warm her up to get kerazy on her later...jk no offense ladies!

I agree about the cold trans and even colder wheather this days, but I keep getting a bit of roughness when the car is at temp in 3rd and sometimes 2nd when downshifting(again it feels like "rolls" over a gear or the syncros as well as the occational click). Just note my concern is not that the gear won't go in, its more of a quailty of the shift( 3rd mainly), and only when its really cold that it won't let me in.

I called my friend at SOD and he told me that they yet have had any real problems with the STi tranny (main reason I got the car), but he would drive it when I take it next week for its first oil change. I posted this question on another forum and it seems I'm not the only one with this situation, but I have yet to hear if this causeing any failures. If this is just the way it is then that's cool, but I would hate to think I have a trany problem waiting to happen.

I get the 'nick' going into 3rd/5th sometimes too. I'm starting to think it has something to do with the clutch delay valve. I could be wrong but wouldn't quickly pressing the clutch pedal to the floor still have a delayed or sluggish clutch disengagement?

Everytime it feels like I timed it wrong and didn't have the clutch all the way in yet but I swear I do.

Well, the only thing I would add is that down shifting into 3rd sometimes feels llike two nicked-up ballbearings rolling over each other other than the normal "gear engagment" feel that the rest of the set has.

I looked around and could only find one STi owner with a "real" problem (unlike the many WRX or EVO owners). So, how does this tranny work differently and how do I shift it to avoid this "nick"? Thanks agin.

What is that? Is it unique to the STi?

wow hmm

BMW installs these on the 3 series and they put them on the M3... people used to remove them and I had this mod done on my E46 M3 myself... and it really improved the modulation of the clutch... its basically a valve that prevents you from dropping the clutch... it limits flow in one direction but not the other... so you can't release the whole clutch all at once... it prevents shocking the driveline with super hard instant clutch drops but it prevents you from working it as precisely as you want.

does anybody know about the subaru cdv? I'd like to know more about it, and if it's like the BMW one, I'm gonna rip it out next time my car's on a lift.
