deteriorating clutch

I know of the test where you load your car up with friends and then find a hill in order to note any slippage, but in general, in what way is a failing clutch most notable?

In past cars I would notice it in the upper gears. I would punch it in, let's say, fourth and the rpms would climb in a dispraportionat manner compared with the increase of speed.

Also, if you are starting to notice that bruning clutch smell after normal driving (no hard launches, long bouts of bumper-to-bumper, etc.) that is usually a good sign of a slipping clutch.
