Clutch not engaging?

I just had a new transmission installed into my WRX. When everything was said and done we started the car and began to put it in gear and....no good. When we push the clutch pedal all the way down and move the shifter into a gear slot you hear a "tick" noise that gets faster, the longer you keep the shifter near the slot. We raised the car off the ground a few inches and had the car in gear and started it up with the pedal down. When we did that all 4 were spinning, with me pressing the clutch all the way down. He then pulled the shifter fork back some more with a bar and it went into gear. My question is, what is making the slave cylinder not push as far as it needs to? We replaced the cylinder with a 2005 WRX cylinder (mine is a 2002 WRX) and it still did the same thing? Guys I need all of yalls help, Im running low on money and time, and yall are the only pros I know around! Thanks!

My friend did a clutch change a while ago and somehow managed to bend the clutch disc. When he put the car together he could not put the car in gear at all. He had to undo the whole thing and get a new clutch.
