clutch comparison question - please help

Hey guys, hopefully i can describe my situation well enough to be understood.

i have an 04 wrx, and its the first manual car i've ever owned. been driving it around for over a year now. i have a friend with an 02 wrx, and when i drove his, i found his clutch to be very different from mine. heres where it might get confusing. my 04 clutch feels very long, and very light. whereas my friends 02, has a very short "clutching" distance and requires more leg pushing to depress it.

so i thought this was a redesign between the 02/03 and the 04/05. however, i just now finished driving my other friends 04 wrx. and his clutch feels very similar to the 02 i've driven, if not the same.

my question is 1) is there a difference in the clutches of the 02/03? and if so, then 2) why would my 04 clutch feel different than my buddies 04 wrx?

im just worried that maybe my car is messed up or somthing, and im not sure, since this is the way its always been since i got it new.

Any help would be great to put my mind at rest, or to tell me to go get it fixed by the dealer under warranty.

sorry for the long post, i hope its not too confusing.

my old 02 was the same as you describe yours to be now.

Every Subaru that I have driven has had a different feel to the clutch. It is adjustable to make it feel how you like. Nothing is wrong with it though

yeah, dont get me wrong, im totally used to my clutch and the way it drives. i just was mainly worried that since there seemed to be an inconsistency between how two cars from the same model year felt, i thought that mine might have been defective or somthing.

the original factory '02 clutch kit had a stiffer clutch pedal that what was reinstalled after bringing it back to the dealer, while under warranty, for the "clutch judder".

2004 clutch

YOU WANT THE TRUTH...
Subaru is covering their *** with abuse forms
soooo They dont get slapped with a lemon law
I drive my car like a normal human being
this is my 3rd subbie
from an 89 legacy wagon
to an 2001 2.5 rs
to an 2004 WRX STi
LET ME TELL YOU........my clutch went at 7000
they wanted me to sign an abuse form i said no
THEY STILL PAYED FOR IT..
THEY ARE NOT GOING TO BREAK ME...
Now at 31000 the clutch goes again..
I have no mods i drive to work and back
i work 12 hours a day as a chef i dont have time to
go out racing my car... i just wanted a nice car to get to work and back
so at some point during my work filled day i would have a smile on my
face knowing that i was driving the STI
i have loved them since the 94 wrx japanese version...
BUT FOR A 6 SPEED TRANNY YOU NEED A 6 puck clutch
not a 3 puck clutch.....
AGAIN especially after the first clutch went i drove her like
a granny....BUT subaru is busy telling me i abuse the car
instead of looking for the real problem...
For god sakes every car in my house and growing up were
all sticks...never replaced a clutch in any of my cars..
not even the one i learned on...but now i'm on my 3rd with
the sti give me a break...

Change your hydrolic clutch fluid. Try using a performance fluid like SuperBlue. This will stiffen it quite a bit. If thats not enough, increase the line width going to the slave cylender (I can't spell worth crap). This may provide you with a better mechanical advantage over the slave. The line is located on the top of the bell housing. There should be a little nipple on it that looks and works like a brake line bleeder. Call a buddy over with a six pack and get to work. Remember that you don't want it as stiff as the brakes.

The ATE Super Blue fluid is good fluid with decent boiling points, but the blue dye is nasty, and it can take several successive bleeds to get all the dye out.

If you want to stick to ATE fluid, their Type 200 fluid has the same boiling points, but is light yellow in color, so that when it absorbs water over time, it gets darker, so that you can tell when its time to change it.

The SuperBlue fluid is dark to start with, so it makes it hard to tell when its time to change it.

Personally I prefer the AP racing fluid, it works really well.

Regarding puck-type clutches:

The Subaru SPT/JDM STi puck-type clutches for the 6MT STi transmission have a 3 puck disc, there are aftermarket companies that do make them with more than 3 pucks, but there is no need to have more than 3 pucks, it is not "wrong".

They are however extremely difficult to use for a daily driver, are very difficult to engage smoothly, and can "judder" and generally be rough as well.

The SPT/JDM STi 7.7mm Heavy Duty Organic clutch kit, when coupled with the SPT JDM STi lightweight chromoly flywheel, works very well, has a nice, heavy clutch pedal feel, and has very solid engagement, and in general is a huge improvement over stock, and has far better drivability than a "puck-type" clutch.
