Building up your transmission
Alright, this may seem like a dumb question but I seriously want to know the answer. I've been reading a lot of stuff about how the WRX trans is pretty weak. What kind of things can be done to make it better equiped for moderate power gains besides just getting a better clutch? Thanks.

What you should ask yourself is how you plan to launch and treat the tranny. For example any type of drag racing or heavy clutch and rev work would need more serious attention to details.
From what i've read here the main problem with the wrx tranny is the case flex. I had it explained to me the flex in the case tends to actually strip and shatter the gears on the pressure exerted.
If you want you can sorta help the flex by getting tougher gears which will survive the abuse longer but not forever and by no means on a very powerfull engine. It seems people start having real big issues at the 300hp mark with breaking gears.
The overall best solution is to get a sti 6mt tranny which is by far a better transmission. With your car being a wrx i'm also told you need a different rear differetial ratio.
Hope that was helpfull

You dont need to buy or change anything in your tranny to make it survive, all you have to do is treat it right ie dont drop the clutch, dont launch the car without slipping the clutch, dont bang in gears and slam the gas etc etc. I have never seen a tranny go where the gear has been engaged then the power applied.

i may be an odd story but i beat the HELL out of my tranny (fast shifts, launch hard ALL the time, ect) and i have been doing it for 80k miles and the tranny has surpassed my expectations. just as long as you dont DUMP the clutch (slipping it propperly is almost as fast anyway) you tranny will last and you can drive pretty damn hard. hard enough, dare i say, to beat a manual Mustang GT all day long. i say get used to slipping the clutch from aroung 4500 to 5000 rpms and ruin the clutch you have in it THEN buy a stock or slightly upgraded replacement and be done with it. if you are REALLY nervous you could look into the STi RA gearsets, there a cheap alternative to the weak gear problem and will help you 1/4 mi times because the gears are a little closer. people may not agree with me but its my 2 cents and ill spend it anyway i want to
i guess it depends. the gear set is like 1300ish from Gruppe-s and you need syncros to go with that so you talking like 1500 parts ans probobly 500 labor unless you know someone. dont quote me on that though.
