I have a 2005 impreza wrx, 5- speed, I want to build my tranny to make it stronger (comparable to the sti tranny). Anyone done this or have suggestions on how to go about it. Or do you just think I should swap in a JDM 5- speed sti tranny?

 

Man... why go through all the trouble? Are you driving your car to a professional race event or something? If you are, might as well buy the swap or build the current one to STi built.

But, if it's a normal everyday driving car, and fun every now and then, not worth it. Just my opinion on this matter, don't let anything stop you! I would just swap it if I was in your shoes though.

STi version 6 RA gearset can be cryogenically treated and is stronger than the standard 5MT gearset. The gear ratio spacing is also ideally suited to the power band of the EJ20 and EJ25 turbo engines and keeps the RPM in the power band for performance purposes. The following vendors have offered these RA gearsets on occasion but they are scarce and hard to come by. Other non-i-Club vendors are often backordered as well.

Even when this gearset is installed in the 5MT, it is still not as strong as the 6MT, which is a completely different design and much beefier in many ways. That's the reason it weighs quite a bit more than the 5MT.
