Yeah, there is a small bomb packed with C-4 explosive that is wired to the odometer, which will go off right when you hit that precise mileage...

...

Whatever you were reading is complete bunk. There's nothing in a transmission -- any transmission -- that would suddenly fail at a certain mileage as long as you are doing normal maintenence (changing fluid at 15 to 30k, using th right kind). If there was any substantial manufacturing defect in a transmission it would show up long before the 50k mark. Besides, there are most likely very few 02 WRXs that have crossed 50k miles so far (25k a year is fairly heavy driving, even for a daily commuter) so even if you wanted to study this, there's too small of a data pool to draw from.

Car Info: 02 wrx R.I.P.
My wrx (R.I.P.)had 82000 miles on it and the tranny broke just a little over 50k.If you have driven the car hard since it was new go figure. Most people who I saw break a tranny happened around the same. Also the main reason they break is because of driver error.

i don't know if this is a statement to be made with absolutely certainty. one thing's for sure though -- the wrx tranny should NOT be the first one you learn to drive on.

I would have to agree with you, the tranny isn't too forgiving
