4eat Tranny Fluid Changing

I think it is as simple as pulling the drain plug and then refilling, is there something that I am missing?

Also, I am going synthetic, what kind of synthetic should I get? How much will it run me? How much will I need?

That's pretty much it other than making sure it is warm. Of course be careful not to overfill, do the add check, add check routine. Start the engine let it idle and shift through the gears. Put it back in P and check it again and add more if necessary.

Never used synthetic and I forgot what brand somebody was saying they used. I'd just go with good ole' Dexron III myself.

The capacity is 9.8 qt. IIRC. A drain and refill is 4 or 5.

21,XXX, I figure Ill do it when we do the tranny coolers, if it is really as easy as pulling the drain plug and then refilling.

Exactly

When i did it i changed to Redline D4. but if i had to do it again i would have used Mobil ATF because it's available in every autoparts store and it's good stuff. I bought my redline d4 atf from tognotis because it's one of a handful of places in Sacto that sells it. If you happen to go there be sure to check in the back if the store next to the fuel cells because they have tons in boxes...just incase they haven't re-stocked the shelves.

Get a long funnel so you can reach the dipstick well. Drain the fluid when it's hot and into a container that measures volume. it'll need to be a big enough container so you can gather at least 3-5 qts of fluid. When it's ALL drained measure how much fluid is in the container. Then add approx that much back into the tranny. Be sure to NOT add all of it at once because it's tricky and you may overfill it.

Be sure you're on a level surface, start te engine, let it heat up and run through the gears from P to 1 and back at about 30seconds each. then check the fluid.

eric

EDIT: forgot to mention you'll need another crush washer as used in the oil plug. it's the same exact crush washer
