1st Gear problem ('02 WRX)

Heya!

I have a 2002 WRX w/ 92000 miles on it. Never had any problems w/ it as far as tranny/clutch goes (except shudder problem). Recently (last 2 weeks) I've had a problem shifting into 1st gear from a complete stop (ie stop sign). The tranny doesn't "grind" but the gear catches 2 out of 10 times shifting into 1st.

I just changed the tranny oil, same problem, should I look at the clutch fluid (levels are ok, but it hasn't been changed in forever)

Or is my clutch starting to fail? I have the original clutch w/ 92000 miles on it, I have dropped the clutch from 7000k prolly 3-4 times (after break in period when I first got the car and drove like a jackass)

What do you guys think?

Thanks!

well turn off the car and see if it does the samething.. if it does then its not the clutch problem
and its your tranny
but im betting on your tranny that is the problem

It actually stopped doing it about half a month ago... No problems getting into first whatsoever now... And I didn't change a thing... Wierd.

 for good luck that it won't come back soon.

HI there. Not trying to hijack the thread so excuse me im new

i just purchased an 03 and noticed the same problem. Mine seems to be fine while cold but after its been running a little if i shift into 1st from neatral it gives a grind. Cluth fully to the floor.

I havent checked the fluid yet ill be taking a look at that tonight. Mine doesnt seem to grind often and if i go from N to 2nd then 1st its never done it. ]

Glad the orig poster seemed to clear up.

Best Wishes
Adam

Had the same problem right after my engine swap ... ended up that the slave cylinder developed a very small leak that corrupted the fluid. Also the clutch plate was going out and taking the through out bearing and pilot bearing with it.
Have it checked out by a tranny shop, if nothing else you buy yourself the knowledge that your pilot bearing, throughout bearing, clutch plate, and everything is in good condition.
Besides .. it's a good excuse to put a light flywheel on ... they're fun

Good luck
