05 WRX - Reverse and other Gear Problems

It takes me lots of tries just to get it into reverse also if im at a dead stop and if i try just shifting it to other gears, it won't let me sometimes. I have only 750miles on my 05 WRX. Is this normal for a WRX or should I take it to the dealer to get it checked out?

i had trouble with reverse for about 1500 miles. My reverse is worked in now but i dont know about your other gears. I would wait a little while longer, your gears might not be broken in yet. if it continues i would go ahead and have it checked out

i've had my car for 20k miles and i have that exact problem you have. i think i've read other member responses about the 5th gear having no syncro or somthing. what usually helps is if you shift into first, get the car rolling just a tiny bit and shift into reverse. works every time. or another thing i try is just going to neutral clutch out, then in, and try again.

I've never owned a stick shift car that didn't need at least an occasional double-clutch to get into reverse.

I have hte same problem as you in my 04. First gear and reverse tend to be a pain in subarus. I double clutch and it works out a little better. So clutch, put it in neutral, then clutch again in to the gear u want. hope that helps

Sometimes I have trouble with reverse, but I always have trouble with first when rolling anything above like 10mph or so.

or go to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, clutch out, clutch in, then shift to reverse.

Sometimes it takes several tries to get in reverse on my 03 as well. I just put it in neutral, clutch out, clutch in, and try again. If that doesn't work after a few times, I put it in first, wait a bit, and try again. Pretty annoying.

Suggestion

I had the, "WTF I can't get into reverse" in my05 wrx problem too. Sometimes I have a similar problem with shifting quickly through the gears. What I did, which I have found makes a significant difference in getting through the gears and especially into reverse, was installing kartboy shifter bushings. I installed the fronts practically since I bought the car. While they didn't help with getting into reverse they did help with a more solid shifter response. What did help I found, was installing a kartboy rear shifter bushing. I noticed right away that I didn't have to work that hard to get my car into reverse, it just fell into place like it was supposed to. Try it, at 35 bucks it's a worth while investment.

Pump your clutch 3 times before putting it into reverse. This always works for me.

I have an '04 WRX with around 26,000 miles and I've got the same issues going into R and 1st (while rolling). Just think of it this way, was the car really made to go into reverse? 99.999999999999999% of the time you're going forward anyways, so I'm not too annoyed.
