launching, any suggestions on learning how to launch and how to not get any bad habits

wsup with you people teaching people to dump the clutch? He doesnt want broken drivetrain parts.

If you have a dyno chart of your car look at where your peak torques at launch there. feather the gas at that rpm and SLIP the clutch.

 

lol dumping the clutch is bad, so dont do that.

I have a decent launch and I do mine like this:

Tap rpms to about 5500rpms, keeping it between 5000 and 5500, any less and you're going to bog and look like a dork Tap the gas two to three times before green, keeping your rpms up, then quickly let off the clutch slowly... yes, quickly.. but slowly... while giving it gas smoothly.

You're going to have to learn by feeling, so if its something you want to really learn its going to cost your some wear and tear on the drivetrain.

You're going to be playing the clutch in and out if you do it right as you give it gas. The feeling is kind of like playing and fighting that of torque steer.

I am currently stage II and on stock all seasons, which tend to burn out more than grab with this high of a launch... at least for a second. Now that I have a significant increase in power and more importantly torque its different than launching a stock wrx. Remember if you take advice from an STi guy that their launches will be a little different due to the DCCD and the fact that their boost kicks in almost 1000rpms later than wrx's... plus they redline at 7200 (as well as 02-05 wrx's) but 06+ wrx's redline at 6200 so you're going to have to shift quickly and do this flawlessly in order to make up for having to shift earlier with the higher launch

but in my opinion
higher launch with consequential sooner shifting time wise > lower launch with bog
5500k launch > 4500k launch

If you don't want to launch your car that high because it's hard on the car then drag and launching isn't for you lol.

 

it just depends on where ur peak torque is. I think its best to launch there.

I like tapping the gas pedal 3-4 times as the lights count down If you get good and time it right you jump off the line light a bullet and the rest is gravy as long as you don't miss a gear...Like cdaddy said, slipping is good...

 

It depends on what mods you have on your car. You want to launch at an RPM in your engine's torque curve. I am launching at 3.5-4K RPM now and it works well for me, especially if you slip the clutch just enough to build good boost off of the line. I had my head buried in my headrest last night in a good launch haha. BTW I am Cobb Stage II which has most of the torque at a lower RPM, so I can launch w/out bogging. I used to launch at 5-5.5K like most of the people here advise you to, but I have not had too good 60ft's with it. But to each his own...so you decide and figure out what works best for you

I know a guy that launches around 4K and he gets 1.5-1.7sec 60ft times at the tracks

 

letting it grab then dumping it is still dumping no matter how you argue that. Still shock to the drivetrain. No ones being ignorant here.
