USDM WRX EJ20T ECU on JDM WRX EJ20T motor?

I was wondering if this setup, USDM WRX EJ20T ECU on a JDM WRXEJ20T motor would work, I am looking for a fix to the OBDII problem for when I finish my swap, I have everything lined up I just need the money. Also what about the wiring harness? It seems to me it would work because its the same engine. I have been searching all over hell for a fix to the OBDII problem with imported engines but I cant find one.

ok, if I understand correctly, I have a 2000 GC8, which means my car has to pass OBDII emissions, but the engine I am getting is an OBDI engine, 1994 EJ20T JDM STI, therefore I need to find an engine management system, hopefuly for cheap, just for now at least, that will get me past the OBDII check. so what I was thinking, since the WRX motor in the states is the same as engine as the EJ20T out of japan, would that harness work?

It's the same for the same year, Such as USDM 02 will work for JDM 02, but not for a 94. The engines will bolt in, but there are differences in the intake manifold, such as TGV's and other EVAP sensors that don't exist on an older motor and the newer intake won't bolt up to the older motor.

There are reasons that I and other shops do the swaps the way we do, because it's the right way. That's why mine and others are able to go to a smog referee and become certified. If you're cutting corners because of budget then you're better off not doing it at all until you can do it properly, trust me it will pay off in the end.

So by proper you mean swapping the engine with the harness, that was my original plan, and the clip I am buying comes with the harness, engine, tranny, rear end, and axels, so I should have everything to do the swap, I am going to do all of the "bolt on" installation and then take it to a shop to have them do the wiring, I know the shop owner and he said he would do it. Is this cutting corners? but my question still remains, this engine is a 1994 engine, and in japan that is still OBDI so could I just put an aftermarket computer in there? or what?

It really depends where you live, here in California we have the most strict emission laws in the country. The differences in the '94 vs. '02 harness and engine makes it not possible to just swap ECU's. If you're in a different state that doesn't have the smog laws we have then you could go with an aftermarket stand alone or simply use part of the harness that it takes to run the motor. Like I said it depends on your state's smog laws, here we can't put an older motor in a newer car.

I am from Oregon, and well, as I dont know the laws verbatim I do understand that if you can get the car registered at an address outside of the city limits then you dont have to get a smog check, which would make my life a lot easier, so I might be able to do that. However I would like the OBDII problem clarified, from what I gather, they basically plug in your computer to the machine and if it throws a cel you dont pass right? they dont do the thing where they hook up your exhaust? or am I wrong?

they do both...

They run the OBDII (On Board Diagnostic Tests) and a tail pipe sniffer test. On 2wd cars they also run them under load (on a dyno)for like 10 mins but they cant require all the test stations to have the 4wd dyno's yet but it is coming, i believe they said 2008 all stations will be required to have 4wd dyno's to comply w/ the new smog laws.

so for the on board diagnostics it just checks to see if your engine is throwing a cel right? The cobb access port system turns off all of those, so then all I would need to do is make sure it passes the sniff right?
