Smogging a Hybrid USDM Motor with a JDM ECU on an 04 WRX

Hydrolocked my EJ205 a few months back, doing a mild build on a new motor.

Have an EJ255 bottom end in hand off an 06 WRX I want to use. There are ways to make EJ205 heads work with the 255, but I'm still not clear as to the benefit.

Newer, better, bolt-right-on heads, with the added bonus of AVCS are availible anyway. The effort to get that to work seems worth the benefit, I think I hope, unless I'm disuaded otherwise here. Smog is the big ish.

I'd like to use 2008 STi EJ257 cylinder heads - these were the last year to feature single (intake) AVCS. It's a mess for a few reasons trying to do dual, so I won't bother. Picking 08 because in being newer, I can presumably get used heads with lower mileage.

I'd like to use my current 205 wiring harness, which does not support drive by wire, which is fine by me for simplicity, and DBC FTW.

It appears an EJ207 ECU off a v8 JDM STi can control the single AVCS, and is still DBC. As a happy coincidence, I was planning on using a v8 Spec-C twin scroll turbo setup anyway.

I'm putting in some TGV deletes, and aparently one can repurpose the wiring/connectors to the tumbler motors to work the AVCS, just moving the pins around on the ECU connector.

There's some obvious (to us) things that wouldn't fly, but what will be obvious to the tech that I can obscure or change as needed to pass? Ie: keeping the 205 ECU to drop back in and having an appropriate tune on that, etc.

I have an Open Port to deal with the TGV CELs, and can force the readiness monitors with that too. The v8 ECU is ODBII. I'm getting it tuned for 91/E85. I've heard things about braided steel AVCS lines can cause one to fail visual, for reasons not clear to me. Turbo is stock location, and a stock part moreover, just not to the domestic market. Same deal with manifold and downpipe - Subaru badging and all.

Anything else I might be missing?

Anyone? Or did I end up answering my own question by thinking aloud here...?

Smog = USDM ECU, bypassed AVCS
The rest of the year: JDM ECU, AVCS VTEC-aru vroom vroom zoom zoom?
