stupid ca. smog question
i just bought a 96 brighton and i have a my99 2.5rs sohc motor left over from my other swap that i want to put in in the 96. the swap is the easy part if i keep the 1.8 ecu but has anyone tried to get this swap refereed in ca. recently? or has anyone just tried to get it smoged anyway when registration was up? i don't really want to go through the whole cut and splice thing again just to put another n/a motor in it.

Before for you make any big $$ Decisions contact bar. I am just a smog tech, not a smog referee. They make us study this stuff for the smog test. I have no real
world experience.
To be "legal" since the motor is of a different size and year. You need what ever came from the newer motor:
ecu (I am sure the 99 has a differenct obd drive cycle than the 96)
all the sensors that effect emissions (this just an example I don't
know the difference of your two motors. EX newer motor is a wideband
02 sensor and the old motor used the regular 02 sensor. You would need
to switch to the new sensor.)
evac (if it is a different)
If this 1999 motor was available in 1996 your make and model of car, you can
just get buy with what ever was required in 1996 for that motor in your car.
