Car Info: 02 Impreza WRX sedan
The drivetrain can be swapped into some earlier models and even into models other than the Impreza but it's not always simple. An article on swapping a WRX engine into an Outback published in Sport Compact Car Magazine about a year or so ago told that the tough part was the wiring harness conversion which took many, many hours to do correctly. This is necessary if you want to use the factory type ECU, which is more advanced than earlier ECUs. If you go with aftermarket engine management, you avoid the hassle of wiring the car but you'll have to learn how to tune it or find someone who can do so.

wiring in an aftermarket ecu would be the same the hardest and most time consuming part is labeing and finding all the wires after that its just a matter of untaping the harness and soldering in the power and misc wires... not as bad as everyone makes it sound
