Pull engine & tranny together or seperate?

Pulling the engine and tranny from my '05 9-2x today. Should I pull the engine while its still connected to the tranny or seperate them in car and pull the engine, and drop the tranny seperately?

....Crickets....

Well got everything ready. Gonna try to pull the engine separate from the trans. Taking a break for dinner, wish me luck.

I apologize if the answer is obvious. I tried a search, but didn't get back anything conclusive.

Engine and tranny come out separate from one another, pluck the engine through the bay and drop the tranny out the bottom.

Arrg, dowel pins were frozen to the block and there really wasn't a way to get at them with the combo in car.
So out it came...

Tap tap with a hammer and drift on the dowel pins and the tranny came right off.

The assembly came out pretty easily from the top. Need two people, one to operate the hoist, and one to put a little weight on the tailshaft of the tranny. Pay special attention to the pitch stop mount on the firewall, so as not to mangle it with the tailshaft.

Bought the car on the cheap cause it had a light rod knock. If you look in the background of the pic you'll see the goodness that's about to go in.
