01RS/STI Whats the best tranny option????

Im planning on a USDM STI motor swap and i was told I could save a few g's by getting a jdm 5 speed tranny with 4.44 final drive from a Ver.IV instead of a USDM 6 speed. Im hesitant about putting anything from an older car onto my 01 RS. What's my best option???Do i go JDM Or do I bite the bullet and go 6 speed???

Any feedback would be much appreciated....Thanks

Your best option is a JDM non-DCCD 6MT, but if you can't afford that, then any of the older STi 5 speeds with a front LSD is a good choice. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have your mechanic crack it open and inspect the bearings and synchros before you install it. In the meantime, your stock tranny will be fine. It will cost more to open the gearbox to look at it before you install it, but it will be cheaper than putting it in and finding out it's already broken.

I tell people all the time the 6 spd just isn't necessary, it's overkill and it's heavy. You just have to be somewhat practical with your driving. I'm still running my RS tranny in my track RS with V7 EJ20, the RS gearing is very nice for EJ20's. It's held up quite well, with literally hundreds of drag races and dozens of track days. Though someday I may too have to go 6 spd, just so I can thrash w/o worry, that and I happen to have one here for over 2.5 years now w/4k miles on it.

Garage tuning is shipping the parts for me and will do the conversion. Im going with an 04 USDM STI engine + a JDM ver IV tranny and R180. Thanks for the tips.

PPG gears 1-2 or a 1-4 would have been my choice

JDM is definately the way to go. Sounds like what you got is exactly what I was going to recommend. Cheers! Can't wait to see the completed car.

Sacrificing ABS for DCCD R-180 and 2 potters. Should be good to go next week or so. 04 STI motor + the 5 speed and fuel tank are in. Added some aluminum control arms from the GC8 clip.
