what other awd cars out there?

Mercedes and Jaguar offer AWD on most (if not all) of their cars. VW has the 4-motion system available on a fair amount of their cars. Infinity is introducing the G35X with is AWD. Saab might start offering it on more cars then the 9-2X.
AWD/4WD cars are starting to pick up in popularity too, so we can expect to see a lot more soon.
Personally, I would love to get a G35X

The Matrix is Toyota's first car available with AWD in nearly 10 years, Mitsubishi doesn't make any other AWD car except the Evo, but the rest of the cars that I and wrx ish mentioned are current models.
The Subaru AWD is arguably one of the best, especially with regards to price. I'm not really super familiar with the specifics of the other car companies AWD systems, but I would assume they are decent. I would assume that most come with a limited slip in the rear, so they've got to be worth the extra money.
It also depends on which Subaru AWD system you are refering to. Take the base Legacy, Impreza or Forester with an automatic transmission and without limited-slips. Then these other systems are probably a bit better.

Actually, throughout most of the history of the Skyline, it was a RWD car.
It wasn't until the 90s, with the GT-R R32, that AWD was offered as an option.
(I also found an error in my previous post. The GT-R designation was around longer then the AWD option)

A majority of AWD cars on the market today, from my understanding, are not a full time symetric AWD system like Subaru's. After talking to a Porche salesman for a while, I think Porche and Subaru's AWD systems are very similar. Besides that most others (i.e. Audi/VW, Infinity/Nissan) use a part time AWD system. The Audi is mainly FWD until the front wheels slip then the rear wheels engage. The Infinity (at least the FX I know since my father owns one for whatever reason) is just the opposite.

Cheap and AWD don't usually go hand in hand. Having said that, if you consider 17 or 18k (whatever a TS wagon goes for now) "cheap" then yeah, Subaru is probably the only manufacturer that has lots of "cheap" AWD cars. I really like my Outback Sport and from what I've read, the system in the manual transmission models (like mine) might actually be more advanced/reliable then the one in the automatics. Which reminds me, someone mentioned the Matrix. It's only available with AWD with an auto and from what I've heard the engine is pretty anemic (you can't get the 180hp engine and AWD).
