what is better all around performer?
What if the world suddenly stopped spinning? What if the sky was purple? I'll tell you right now the WRX has AWD, and the GST doesnt, but other than that stop dicking around and race if you're gonna race.

and yet another *** has entered the subaru world...try being helpful or keep it 2 yourself.
in response to topic, check the stats through sites like edmunds.com. find turning circles, stopping distances, 0-60, etc. etc. most important though, find the car that suits you best. we don't need anymore people buying fast cars and not be comfortable driving them.

Car Info: 02 WRX wagon=dead; rollin' in a Craptastic Camry!
My brother has a stock '96 GSt. I have driven it extensively and he has driven my stock WRX extensively. He thinks my car is faster and I think they are about the same in terms of acceleration. The big problem with his GS-t is that when you punch it coming out of a corner the front wheels lose traction.
The Eclipse feels more like a sports car - DUH! I have a wagon - the cockpit really wraps around you and you feel lower to the ground. The downside is that there are significant blind spots in the car. If you have a stiff neck, you probably wouldn't want to drive that car. I touched on cornering a bit, my wagon has more suspension travel, but surpisingly, not much more body roll than the GSt. I'd bet the WRX outperforms the Mitsu in absolute grip, although if you're going by driving feel you may prefer the Eclipse or want to mod the WRX suspension (again, I am speaking from experience with a wagon).
They're both fun cars, I wouldn't mind driving a GSX to see how much power the awd saps from the power plant and adds to the handling.

I had 2nd Gen Eclipse before Impreza.
Impreza has better handling for sure.
Eclipse (FF) had a heavy understeer while on the gas, and moderate oversteer while off the gas. It was fun in a way because I could control the car by throttle but Impreza is more stable and very neutral. I can use more constant throttle in turns with Impreza. Of course it depends on driving skills though.
My car was FWD Impreza and converted to AWD, I feel Impreza is more nuetral handling in both of the drivetrain.
I am curious how Eclipse GSX AWD handles. I bet it has heavy understeer compared to Impreza. I think the problem with Eclipse is the weight distribution.

Well, kinda pulling this out of the past (3rd page) but I felt somewhat inclined to reply, as my Wife has a '97 Talon TSI AWD (pretty much the same as what you are asking and some replies above however, it being AWD so even more apples to apples). From first impressions I think her car is faster than my WRX, however, I haven't jumped all over the Rex yet as it is still in breakin. I did pound a bit on the Dealers Lot WRX that I test drove (bought the showroom one) and it seemed that hers had a stronger pull to it (again WRX not broken in yet). IMHO it shouldn't be that way as I have a HP advantage over the Talon (227 to 215 iirc) and I don't think there is much of a weight difference. I'll make a better judgement in about 900 more miles
.
Now having said that, I prefer driving the WRX by a very large margin. The Talon has a sunroof and thus my 5'11" body doesn't fit comfortably in there (head rubs the liner), and I much prefer the steering and road feel of the WRX (then again the Talon is older and not as tight anymore). All around I fit much better in the WRX and find it much more enjoyable to drive.
As for which is better over all performance, I'm honestly expecting that after breakin the WRX will outperform her car in all areas. And if it doesn't then, well.... I'm not exactly new to modding :P.
In conclusion, they are both very cool cars, both can be made to go as fast as your wallet allows (straight line and twisties). Drive both and pick whichever you enjoy more, you can't go wrong imo. Of course the Talon/Eclipse will probably initally cost quite a bit less to acquire.
One note on the Talon / Eclipse, do a search or two on crank walk, something a potential buyer of the 2nd gen ones should be aware of.
