Toyota's Alessandro Volta Concept

I'm not trying to steal Black Shadow's job here I just found this one to be interesting...

" The Volta also contains a souped-up version of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy system, combining a 3.3-liter V6 engine and two electric motors for a total output of 408 horsepower. The same basic elements will power the 2005 Lexus RX 400h hybrid luxury sport utility. "

Now my first thought is, how long do you think it will be before we see people "modding" their cars by putting in bigger batteries, and increasing voltage on or putting in bigger electric motors?

I'll tell ya, 408hp with two electric motors that provide INSTANT peak torque sounds really freakin cool.

I bellieve Car&Driver's Brock Yates had an article on the issue of modifying hybrids a month or two back, it's an itresting idea. He wrote something about increasing voltage for a short time during acceleration and electric motors are perfect for that because they provide instant torque.

Toyota has put the Prius through a few rallies.

Check out the specs on the prius engine/motor

While the HP is really low on both, the torque on the eletric motor is 295 lb. -ft @ 1200 rpm!!!!!!!

Wow...

That Toyota Prius Rally is SUPER COOL!

Electric motors have continuous torque curves, where as conventional ICE engines have to change gears in order to get torque (hence, theres the redline effect, and lack of power in some engines as you pass redline). HOWEVER, this is merely an application of my RC car knowledge (nitro cars vs electric cars), but I am quite sure the physics involved might be similar.

Just a hypothesis for the huge torque curve

Yup, I'm not an expert on electric cars (RC or regular size), but thats basically what happens. On the Prius, the electric motor puts out 67hp and 295 lb-ft of torque (the gas motor puts out 76hp/82lb-ft).

Also from what I've heard, the full torque is almost instantly on.

its a trend that the sound industry is already doing. if subaru hurries up and puts out their hybrid i think they will "hit it" right on the nose.
