In terms of handling stock, the SRT has the edge. The SRT comes stock with 17's and a more aggressive tire than the WRX. The SRT comes with 205/50/17's "performance" tire stock. If the WRX comes with RE-92's which are an all-season mud and snow rated tire. If the WRX is fitted with 17's and equivalent tires, the edge goes to the WRX.

At the track, it depends on the layout. On short tight courses, the WRX should beat the SRT. On longer courses with sweepers and more open turns, it would be very close. I'm guessing that the SRT would beat the WRX at Laguna Seca and the WRX would beat the SRT at Sears Point.
hmmm well, the two car's 1/4 mile times are pretty damn close, the srt-4 is 14.1 and the wrx is 14.3 and i dont think srt-4 has more power than wrx, it's only got 210 at the crank! and about that srt-4 pulling on rexs on 3rd gear .... from what i can tell, third gear is our gear that pulls the hardest. i'd think it's most likely at the beginning of 4th gear that srt-4 pulls on us .. but at most a car length in the 1/4 mile. and at the tracks FWD will not beat a AWD, the tires and rims matters not! we'll have better exit speed no matter the course. sure our stock tires are crappy as *** .. buh you can use that to your advantage with skill drivers. .. im sure you all heard of inertia drift

Nice website.

XkrazyAsianX, I don't know where you get your numbers from but the SRT absolutely smokes the WRX in terms of power. Without any mods, they are consistently dynoing in the 220-240 whp range. Stock WRX's are dynoing in the 165-180 whp range. Once rolling, the SRT is as fast as the STi and the EVO. Its problem is getting the power to the ground off the line.

AWD is better at laying power down at the exit of the corner. The problem with the WRX is that is has to enter the corner slower than the SRT and thus carries less momentum throught the corner because of the limitations of the tires. The 16" vs. 17" wheel difference doesn't matter as much as the 55 vs 50 aspect ratio of the sidewall, sidewall stiffness, and tire compound. In all of these areas the Michelin tires fitted on the SRT are a much better handling tire than the RE-92's on dry asphalt.

In terms of steady state cornering, the SRT is capable of more lateral G's than the WRX on stock tires for the previously listed reasons. The other advantage the SRT has over the WRX is weight. Since there SRT weighs approximately 300 pounds less than the WRX, the SRT has less lateral inertia working against it in the corners. Other factors that affect cornering are the suspension, weight distribution, and center of gravity (I think I would give a slight edge to the WRX in these departments). Even with the WRX's suspension advantages, the stock SRT can carry more speed into the turns while the advantage shifts to the WRX in acceleration at the end of the turns which is why I stated the track would make a difference on which car has faster lap times. On tight tracks the SRT will have a hard time putting power down in the corners where the WRX can stay on the throttle. On open track, the SRT's hp will make the difference.

Inertial drift applies to all cars regardless of drive. AWD can put more power down than FWD or RWD at the exit of the corner because there are twice as many wheels thus twice as much tire contact patch. As stated previously, putting power down at the exit of the turn is only part of the equation. If a car carries more speed into and through the turn, it may still have higher exit speed for the turn than a car that goes slower though the turn but can put more power down at the exit. I think it was Al Unser Jr. that state that momentum in the turn is everything.

Just because a car is AWD, doesn't automatically mean it is faster in the cornering. In road racing the AWD can be an advantage because as a race progresses, tires wear and lose traction thus impacting the ability brake, corner and put power down. While all cars lose their braking and cornering power (which would negate the cornering advantage the SRT may have to started with), AWD allows the driver to put more power down at the exit of the corners at the end of the race (which would also negate the hp difference).

I have also read that awd affords a driver more possible lines, which can be an advantage in a race with traffic.

The reason it gives you more lines is that the extra drive wheels allow you to go into the more slippery areas (a little more off line) and still put power down. I don't think I would go too far into the marbles though. You'll still be dealing with corner traction issues.

I still remember watching a gentleman named Rich Bontempi who was National SCCA roadracing champion in I believe GT3, who was driving a highly modified 914 and drove various different lines through turns. Even though he was playing around with different lines, he was still turning very fast and consistent lap times. He would probably still dominate the class but his competitiors got his car disqualified because of his roll bar.

Now he's screwing around with Vipers.

hmm well it states here: http://www.dodge.com/srt-4/index.htm...pe=vehicleLink on the dodge website that the srt-4 only have 230 crank hp ... hehe i was mislead by my friend >< so i dont get how it can have 220 whp .. most cars lose roughly around 20% from the crank to the wheels. so even if it only loses 10% it should be at about 207 whp not 220.

its possible that the BHP rating is underrated. the 1.8T from VW is underrated at 180hp.

Also, a lot less power is lost in FWD cars compared to AWD, so it wont have the same decrease in power like the WRX.

stock for stock SRT-4 will win, w/ perfect conditions. throw in rain or snow and the WRX should win. also, the WRX wins in the safety department w/ side airbags, and a solid frame, while the SRT-4 looks like a crushed soda can after its accidents.

I post this in about every forum i go to that mentions the SRT-4, but here we go one more time...

"Go around a corner, however, and this beast's chassis shows its vulnerable underbelly. With way more engine then suspension, it takes some work to go around a corner smoothly. Come in too fast and excessive body roll makes it hard to turn in. Get on the gas too soon and, despite its Quaife LSD, the front end wants to push off the outside turn. Modulate the throttle too abruptly during cornering, and the chassis pitches and bucks in response to the turbo kicking in/out. Around town, this behavior requires a little extra thought in the twisties. At the track, it means slower corner speeds than almost everyone else." (Road & Track: Speed Magazine)

a Celica GT-S (0-60 = 7.4), Nissan SE-R Spec V S-Tune (7.3), and Ford Focus SVT (7.4) all had a faster slalom speed and lap time then the Dodge SRT-4 (5.7). (#s from that issue of Speed Mag)

the SRT-4 is a cool car, lot of power, fast in a straight line, but its not really meant for the track, its meant for the drag strip.

oh and dont forget the fake dual exhaust.

Question: what is the 0-60 time for the SRT-4? ive seen #s from 5.34 - 5.8sec. According to dodge and magazines its 5.8sec. now the WRX hits 60 in 5.4sec, sooo besides at top speeds, shouldnt the WRX beat an SRT-4? especially since it will kill it off the line.

I agree...the SRT4 is more a drag racer than a track racer...but damn it's got some *****!

Almost went with it rather than my scoob...though I decided that I'd rather get a japanese made car and I really love AWD!

i personally donīt care if itīs 240WHP or 400WHP.itīs a FWD car...for me any FWD cars are jokes, period!

Iīll take a AWD car over any FWD cars. RWD is a different story

and just wanna say that if someone how has the money to buy per example a WRX , STI or EVO, bet buys an srt4 is a big *** ****ing idiot!

Its simple. The Srt will beat the Wrx high end. 0-60, not sure, good race. But freeway, srt hands down. But the Wrx will win, rally, snow, and through the mountains.
