I have a 2001 2.5RS ,I was at the light when a Dodge Dakota pulled up beside me. No clue he wanted to race till I heard his tires squeal... so I hammered it after a slow start... I caught up to him in 1st gear of course... then I slammed (and I mean slammed it) into 2nd gear. Very loud smack of the clutch coming together... beat him of course.
Now my question is... is that good for the Clutch/transmission... how are you supposed to do it? I have had the car for a while now... and I keep doing the same thing when I wanna go fast... I really slam the clutch down... Anyone help me out what to do? Tips?
Thanx!

Maybe the experts on this forum could answer this better, but I think its better to quickly engage the clutch than to slip it in (not counting 1st). And keep in mind with an AWD car you'll often hear a "clunk" sound coming from underneath as the center differential catches up during a hard shift. That sound is normal.
But jolting the drivetrain too hard migh be bad. Take a look at the videos at:

That guy really seems to know what he's doing.

there shouldnt be a clunk sound or a jolt at all, if u are a real good driver, you would be shifting smoothly yet causing the car to push forward smoothly instead of clunk, that clunk means you are letting go or dropping the cluch too soon, you need to release it all the way with finese because the AWD clutch is very very sensitive and reactive.
it takes a lot of finese and skills to drive fast and shift right.

Personally, I would have let that truck squeal away, while laughing. Maybe even play along and dog his heels like I didn't have enough car to keep up - see if he catches the joke.
But as for the banging shift, I do that too sometimes. The Escort can squeal in second when I do that, but I know it's bad for the drivetrain. My Outback never squeals off the line.
(FWIW the Escort still has its original clutch at 214,000 mi)
On the Outback, I can feel the rear half of the drivetrain at times like that, or even when I'm on and off the throttle without changing a gear. I never worried about it, I figure it's some natural slap and slam to be expected with that much machinery.
I did get a scare once in the winter, though, when I had frozen slush on the drive shaft - suddenly I could feel it out of balance under the car, it seemed like something was badly wrong *G*

Kid you not, the thing still has its clutch, alternator, and all the exhaust except for the cat which was a recall item back at 120,000 miles. All the tranny is still there except for one linkage part. I've been through two head gaskets (did those myself). It doesn't leak or smoke, still wants to run like a screamer. I can frequently shame cars worth 20 times the money this thing is worth. I've driven it in Miami and Milwaukee, through orchards and pine woods. It has hauled it weight in firewood and furniture. I really wish there were some way I could count the passenger/miles this car has provided.
But the thing is finally rusting too much to save. A few years ago I cut out part of the floor behind the passenger seat, and replaced it with a aluminium golf course sign someone gave me ("Five stroke limit or let others play through") and now the driver's door is beginning to sag because the post it's hinged on is rusting.
Anybody want to buy that drivetrain? It could still make one hell of a go-kart...
