cruel hoax
it appears the SRT-4 recall is a hoax. Possibly started here- http://forums.evolutionm.net/showthread/t-34087.html
I'll admit, part of me would like for it to be true. It would be cool to be running against one and see the smoke as it blew up! You could forever tell the story of how your WRX destroyed a SRT4.
Good luck to the SRT4 owners - the fact that something like this is so easy to believe makes me wonder about the TRUE durability.

A friend of mine bought one...I was blown a way....he had an insanely built up 70 challenger. I mean it was nice enough he sold it to a guy in australia...guy said it will be the only one in the state.....sick car....All v8's for this guy and he gets and SRT-4. He is an excellent driver and he loves it...tried to talk me out of getting a wrx. I said I wante AWD and a wagon.
I actually like what I saw of it...he put new wheels on it and they look great. It sounds nice and runs good. I wouldn't want one but I have no plans of racing one any time soon because I hate loosing. I may race him for fun just to see how close I am...but with 920 miles I am not there yet and I am not used to driving this car hard. Urber chunky gear box compared to my civic...
I think they aren't that bad of a car. We'll have to see how they do maintenance wise...I know performance wise they are going to get very scary very quick...mopar already has kits pumping them up over 300 horsepower.

He just has a two-seater with no chassis rigidity (soft top, right) and only two wheels pushin him around... if i put enough $$$ into it to equal what he paid, i'll kick his ***.
aaiight dude, go smoke the srt; later, Bennie

I had a '97 Neon before I got my '02 WRX. It developed a nasty, expensive to fix oil leak at about 50K, plus a number of other more minor glitches. Also, it was he.. in the snow, the brakes were a joke and it always looked like it was trying to dive into the pavement. The only reason I bought it (used, with just 10K on the clock) was to help my son-in-law out of a bind. I sold it for low cash to a mechanic who said he would fix it in his spare time for HIS son in law! (Yes, I have seen one of the new ones, and they still look like they're about to nose dive>)

The SRT-4 is great bang for the buck and should smoke a WRX anywhere over 30 mph. The biggest detractor for me is it is FWD. I posted on one of the other forums and I'll post again, if it was RWD or AWD, I would consider it.
Too back Dodge had to make is FWD. I guess FWD is safer for people who aren't good drivers (understeer is much safer than oversteer).

If it weren't FWD that car might be unstoppable. It already out 'numbers' a WRX until you invest some sizeable change. And IMO looks worlds better then the Neon style WRX and even the latest gen (which is worlds better but still a little too dumpy in the body for my taste). The neon also has that whole "neon" thing going, a mustang owner who hasn't heard of an SRT-4 will laugh all the way to a big fat loss and then turn around before he admits he got smoked by a 4cyl neon....
But alas have fun with your torque steer fellas... and also have fun trying to never launch out of that sweet spot between bog and burn rubber...

Anyway, I love how my SRT looks, the best thing I like about this car is it's always the underdog to people who don't know what they are! I love to see the look on their faces after wiping them out! haha, did it to a Celica GT-S and some other cars. lol But the front of the car looks badass, but the rear looks like a simple Neon besides the wing and pipes, very decieving when someone's pulling up besides me at a red light....lol.
About the tourqe steer, I don't know if you've driven a SRT but you'd be surprised, there is NO tourqe steer at all, unless you're madly spinning. It's because of the equal length halfshafts, plus no peg leg burnouts. lol
And yes, this car is a royal ***** to launch. Takes a ton of practice and your very right, it's so hard to find the sweet spot between bog and spin! I think I finally got it down and I can launch pretty good.

Besides they limit boost in 1st to help.
Start adding up modifications and eventually you will hit the limit of FWD adhesion QUICKLY. Thats the SRT-4's achiles heel. FWD. By the second or third mopar stage I would venture that torque steer becomes a greater and greater problem as will the wheelspin that causes it. As in FWD drag racing the problem is not the power, it is that the engine can make more power then the drive wheels will ever be able to use.
No doubt very soon someone will have a 400+ hp SRT-4. The problem will be making a 400+ hp SRT-4 do something other then burnouts and torque steer. THAT will be the hard part...

I've never liked the neon... I've heard so many mediocre reviews and horror stories. I'm told that their engines don't hold up well to canadian winters, mainly engine valve freezing and rather expensive fluid leaks. I know a BMW salesman here in Ottawa that says that the minis right now are running neon engines and they they're all having problems in the winter. He said they're great cars and good engines, but winter just really does a number on them.
However, if what I'm hearing is true... just under 20k bones for a 260 hp car is quite a bargain. That's just under 30k in our canadian pesos. Still though, I'd take a wrx any day over a neon. Or even a lancer EVO if and when they decide to bring them into canada. Leaning for that wrx tho... there's already a lancer oz in the driveway.

I love my SRT-4! Every day it makes me
The peg-legging (if there was much to start with) has been remedied with the LSD included on the 04's. There is also no torque steer that I have experienced. I have yet to take it out to an auto-x event, I just got it 3 weeks ago, and the last event I was out of town.
I know that this car will be a PITA in the winter, but that's what the wife's 00 2.5RS is for.

Actually, the 03's don't have the LSD but they still leave 2 solid patches on the ground because of the equal length halfshafts. I'm wondering though, the 04's have a lsd, do they have the equal length halfshafts? I suppose there'd be no need for them now since the LSD is there.
