Unfortunately, I don't think you can find a rental car with a stick anymore. I was a salesman and we used to get prior rentals at auction, never saw one with a stick, not even the Mustangs. At any rate, DEFINITELY get a stick. Unless you have a 40 mile commute in horrible bumper-to-bumper traffic, it's the only way to go. Yet another reason SUVs have much suck. Can't find a 6 or 8 cylinder one with a stick from any manufacturer, and even then they are just extra heavy sedans. Bah.
EDIT: Maybe you should try to compromise with him and get an RS. Still better than any of the above. If you must get an SUV the Chevy is what I'd recommend, but the Altima or better yet the 2 door Accord would be better choices than the Camry. Toyota just makes lame, boring, reliable cars.

I think a WRX as a first car is a bad idea. You've got so much to learn as far as driving is concerned, and I think a high-performance car is exactly the wrong car to learn in. Sorry to poop on yer party, but I think your chances of survival increase as the performance factor decreases. You've got plenty of time to own a hot car. Learn to drive in something a bit tamer...for everyone's sake.

I think that an Impreza RS is about perfect for a first car. It's got just enough power to have a little fun, but not all that much, and the shell is one of the stiffest in any mass produced car. It's safety is incredible. Then later on get the boost. But, given the choices above, the WRX is clearly the one.

I think you should push for the automatic WRX, especially if your dad will pay for your insurance
Try not to kill yourself in the first 6 months by driving like a 16 year old.
If you can't get the WRX, the next best thing would be the Altima V6. It's nice and roomy and has a powerful engine too so you can exceed the speed limit by 75 mph with 5 of your friends in the car without their seatbelts on and the radio on full blast.

If I were your Dad, no matter how rich I was, you'd get a 3 or 4 year old used Camry with a 4 cylinder automatic and I'd make you work to pay for half of it. I think that is pretty generous myself, but that's me
The safest car for you out of that lot you listed would really be a 4 cylinder Camry, even though it may not impress your friends, at least the insurance will be lower, you won't have to worry about a turbo or clutch shudder or thin paint. It'll last you 10 years with proper maintenance and it's very safe.

My MY97 Impreza is by no means my 1st car but as a 1st car an older Impreza is a good deal maybe a 2000 (or even a 99) and definately get a stick. But hey if your dad will by you a new WRX go for it, just don't be an a** when you drive and give the rest of us proud Impreza owners a bad name.
