potential first cars
hi.
turnin 16 in january and have a few options on a car
03 Nissan Altima
03 Toyota Camry Se
03 Trailblazer LTZ
and im trying to convince my dad to consider an
03 Impreza WRX Sedan
the thing is... he hates that theyre turbo, and even more, hates that they normally come in Manual
having never driven stick before, i want to try it .. planning on renting a car to practice and learn
are there any advantages to having an impreza w/ automatic transmission? besides reselling/trading it in at a higher value?
and besides easier driving during traffic/stop-n-go situations?
thx

When I got my 02' WRX I had never really driven a manual car before, just a few times but besides that i didn't really have any expirience. At first i went to the acura dealership and was looking at a GS-R and the salesman wanted me to test drive it but i didn't know how to drive stick so he said, "No problem, i'll teach you, c'mon let's go" so the first car that i really drove stick in was an Integra GS-R. After driving the streets and freeways a bit and feeling a bit more comfortable w/ a stick, we headed over to the subaru lot the next day and i left w/ my own wrx. Just go to the lot and drive like you think you can handle a stick. Even if you can't drive stick the guy will try to sell it to you anyways. Get the rex!

What results do you think you're going to get on this website?
Of course WRX sedan is my vote.
Why don't you test drive all that you have in your poll and decide for yourself? (like you will ultimately do, anyhow)
If the question hinges on the manual vs. auto question, read this:

first car
I got my 99 RS2.5 when i was 17 and it was my first car and i had to learn manual on it. So it got some time getting used to but i love my car to death so i really would pick the WRX. The Altma and the Camry are just out of the question, the WRX is looks cooler, has awd, is faster, the list goes on and on. There are only a few reasons why i would not pick a WRX:
1. The car is damn fun to drive and if you are new to driving and enjoy fast things the WRX would be hard not to speed a little in.
2. hmm can't think of much else...
The best way to convince your dad is that the subaru is probably the safest of all of the cars on your list, the AWD will keep you on the road, the quick acceleration for getting out of getting out of accidents: was tought from racing school that sometimes its better to gas it and turn, than brake in situations, **The Price** get the specs of the WRX and the price on the piece of paper, get a bunch of other cars with similar specs, and show your dad that they are all way more expensive than the WRX and basically be a suck up for time until he has to pick the car.
Good Luck

You are 17, how come Camry and Altima is in the selection? Not like you have a wife and kids...
I would consider Civic Si, RSX, and Celica as well
Get stick shift. I regretted having auto in 2nd gen Eclipse (my first car), and sold the car because of that. You'll get used to it in 3 days.

Learn to drive stick. You'll regret it in the future if you're into performance cars and you get an automatic now. If you're purchasing the car yourself, then you should get whatever you please, but if your parents are payin the bill then I guess you're SOL. Anyway, you should look at older RSs (or new one too, but not as good performance wise). Fun to drive and no turbo (if your father hates turbos so much).
BTW, such a strange selection. A WRX doesn't exactly fit with midsize sedans. If you really want a family car that's still quick, then go for the Altima V6. If you wan't performance and fun to drive then go for a WRX, or like others said, there's many others in differing price ranges (i.e. RSX, Sentra SE-R, or even a Focus SVT).

just out of interest how much insurance would you pay for a 03 wrx sedan at 16 years of age???
people cant even look at those sort of cars here till there 25
unless they have about $4500 a year to spare!!!!
go for a manual (stick)more fun and should do a few more miles to the gallon!!!

gracias
thx for replies
basically the parental units will be payin for it
everything except the wrx was their suggestion
right now his main argument is the size factor
damn consumer reports classify the wrx as a subcompact sized car which is the argument my dads sticking to

Tell your dad about the safty rating of the impreza. It's very good afaik. Do a net search for safty ratings.
My first car was a beat up escort I bought for $350. Your very lucky as I would've killed for the choices you have.

Honestly, size doesn't matter. It's true, Imprezas are classifed as subcompacts. Young people should be in subcompacts anyway. Just because a car is large doesn't mean its safe.
My parents had the same issue too (way back in the day when i first bought a car), so I ended up with a '69 Coup De Ville. I think a teenager in a 2 ton car with 350bhp is a lot more dangerous than a nimble subcompact that can actually stop when you want it to. I've been driving subcompacts ever since, and honestly they're safer in traffic. Much easier to manuver and stop in emergency situations. I've been involved in a bad accident with my RS, and it protected me beyond my wildest dreams.
All in all, large car does not = safety. And SUV is DEFINITELY not safe. Look at safety ratings. That gives a lot more info than people's misperceptions.

hey bro good luck, this is my first car, and it IS an automatic. manual or not, this car is fun as all hell, the performance is great, and i smile everyday after school when i get into the car. if u want a list of arguments for the parents, drop me a pm but really, the list of good that can be presented to the parents with, really makes it a hard car to say no to.
also, if your parents are concerned with it being too fast, the automatic has a little more noticeable lag from a dead stop, so if youre dad decides to stomp it froma light on a test drive (like mine did) by the time he starts to get into the turbo, he will have to slow down anyway (dont worry an uppipe eliminates all of that)
anyway, good luck. but consider yourself spoiled if u get this as a first car, not as in "rich, brat" spoiled, but just because it will probably be hard to go with anything that DOESNT have a turbo, all wheel drive, or sports car handling when it comes time for your next car you will have been bitten for life
