please help-repair question

Hi. I'm a new guy. Please help. I have a 2003 Chevy Cavalier. I was told the fuel sending unit did not work. As far as I understand, this just controls the gas gauge right? So, if I don't mind filling the tank say every 200 miles or so, is it safe to drive, or does the sending unit have other functions? Because for how much the piece costs, it seems it should be more important. Thanks for any help you can give.
