Mazdaspeed Protege vs STI
No comparison, I just bought a very nice 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege and will purchase a late 2004 or 2005 STI. I have learned very valuable lessons with owning first year of a new model cars. The 2001 IS300 had some issues albeit minor but c'mon a new engine. I will wait and will not be suckered into, "there is a two year waiting list." This is what Nissan said about the 350Z and there are tons on the lots and the Audi TT was the same way. I am expecting after they arrive at port you will be able to walk into a dealer say you want one and they will get the car in month or less after the initial rush dies down. I love living on the coast near the port and seeing all the cars arrive and be prepped. Who wants to bet that the car at least with regards to the intercooler, exhaust, body kit, and wing will be asembled at port to protect the shipping. This is good as it protects these pieces. I will try to get pictures of the cars sitting at port. For a June delivery I would expect some to arrive late April. I love the car and will own one eventually. Almost bought a sweet 2003 Yellow WRX. The Mazdaspeed is great but the STI is the king of boost.
Yeah, I noticed that there are a ton of 350Z sitting on dealer lots(3 track editions at the dealer by my house). So much for the car being scarce. I'd wait and see about the STI. I'm sure everybody who wants one will get one and those who can wait a little bit, will save gobs of money! How's the Protege? Seems like a pretty nice car, except the slight lack in hp(nothing a little aftermarket shopping couldn't fix). I hear it's blast in the twisties.

The Protege is a great car. I would say underpowered and very hard to mod. Mazda put "tamper-proof" seals on the intercooler piping, intake piping, and the bov is tamper-proof. I hope Subaru does not do this. The car is a blast to drive and the boost comes on strong if not crazy. The car handles like a dream and the stereo system is well "awesome". I got the orange. 200 wheel HP would be great for the car. You can only raise the boost to about 9 psi since the stock 2.0 engine is used with no upgraded internals and high compression. Also, since it is a limited edition not many tuners will make products for the car. No worries for the STI even though it is a new engine. They are already hard at work

As for for the Mazdaspeed Protege being underpowered, it seems like it was built for the benefit of autocrossers. 170HP is plenty for that application, esp. in its class. If I had the money to get an exclusive autocross toy, the Protege would definitely be on my shopping list.

I've driven one of the Protoge wagons (not Mazdaspeed turbo, of course) and I was thuroughly impressed with the suspension, but not the engine... it was smooth enough, and reved fine with a very smooth power curve.. but just felt really little. It's too bad Ford's throwing all their attention into the Focus as their small car and ignoring the Protoge platform (used to be the same thing as the escort) which actually shows some promise (as the best handling front drive production car ever).
The 350Z is an overweight trophy car. Sure, it looks nice, and it's got a powerful V6, but so did the last Z car.. and look at how that turned out.
The G35 is truely a beautiful automobile, and more practical than the Z in many respects.

How many 350Zs were produced for the initial model year? I'm guessing more than 5000-6000. I'm sure there will be a shortage of Stis because it is a limited production model and there is a high demand for them.. If the demand is not that high, more power to the people who are waiting for them!!! The dealer might be forced to sell them at MSRP or even less! Not expecting that though.
Next up.. Intercooler and exhaust are assembled at the factory for any Subaru. If they do take it off they need to put a cover on the intake pipe that the intercooler attaches to and exhaust pipe so that contaminants won't have a chance of entering the engine. I think they will ship them with the body kits on. I can see the wing being taken off though since this extends out from the body a ways in addition to it being tall
.Any Aussies, New Zealanders, or British here on the thread that can tell us how the previous version of Stis arrived to your respective dealerships? Maybe even the 22B?

it's possible he's talking about the SRT-4- which is dumb because the srt is ugly and fwd. he also might be talking about a trans am. well... actually i don't know what he's talking about and i don't care because you don't buy a car for the horsepower numbers, you buy a car because you like the car. the whole car. how it looks, how it drives, how it feels. shut up with your manufacter's dyno numbers, they don't mean diddly to me.

Sorry, but I got to stick up for the SRT-4.
Some think it is ugly, but I don't, and I plan on buying one.
I also agree that manufacturers numbers mean jack. Dodge originally said SRT hp would be 205, then they said 215. Owners say 227 at the wheels.
Okay, yeah so it's fwd with no LSD, but that just makes for faster ETs later. The only other problem with the car is skinny tires as well. Personally, I will be picking up a black SRT 4 as soon as they hit Houston.
New video for you guys
P.S. I think the Mazdaspeed Protege is a sweet car as well. Just needs more hp! Handling almost can't be beat. Hmmm... Protege handling + SRT horsepower = ?
