maserati dealer yelled at me
i went to the maserati dealer with my friend the other day
he's got an order for one in and wanted to see what I thought
anyways i was sittin in the car and trying out the gearbox...noticed it a little difficult to get in gear and said something to my friend (he's gettin the cabiacorsa anyways, But,,,)
the dealer lady said that it is bad for the tranny to shift with the car off...she said also its got to be "warmed up" to shift smoothly...the latter makes sense, but is it really bad for the car to shift when just in place?

I'm not sure but I remember hearing it wears out the synchros or something like that, but I'm sure someone will elaborate...
Maserati dealers are probably prissy dicks anyway. I wouldn't be suprised if they said you sitting in the car ruined the precious hand stitched leather interior or some BS like that... Exotic dealers have a tendancy to treat anyone who isn't uber rich like scum IME

rare occurance, I've been to my fair share of ritzy dealers and if you come in dressed in anything less than a suit, the only attention you get is negative attention.

yeah well they let him drive it anyways...we're only 19...but thats cause he told them he already had a deposit on the new bently GT...but i just don't see how shifting the tranny like that could be bad for the car...don't you, in effect, do the exact same thing when the car is stopped or transferring into reverse?

Synchros at rest don't like to be worked unnecessarily. While it won't cause damage done a few times, it does cause wear if done repeatedly. Something that won't show up to much later in the cars life. just MHO.
Of course it causes wear and is not good for the trany. Think about it, no gear lube on the gears or synchros. If done nicely it probably wouldn't do much, but repeatedly it will definitely cause a shorter life for the trans.

I just went to the Seattle auto show with a bunch of friends. One guy brought his 8 (I think) y/o son with him. He would get in the cars and absolutely rape the shifter. I don't think he could even reach the clutch either. I felt bad for the cars but they are probably a writeoff anyway.
I liked sitting in the G35 and 350Z though.
I woudn't think its too hard on the tranny if you do it nicely, but if you are all fast and furious on it it may wear some parts out a little.
