Keep on doing what your doing and you WILL EVENTUALLY BREAK YOUR CAR!!!! Just because we have a strongly built car does not mean you can abuse it freely all the time and have NO CONSEQUENCES.... all cars break if you abuse it...its just a matter of time....sure nothing is wrong NOW>...but wait awhile and stuff will start breaking....
Im not saying never drive your car hard...that would be ludicrous... I always love a good couple of sprints every other day.... but to beat the hell out of your car (AKA 5K LAUNCHES) on every stop-light seems abit excessive!
dont ya think so?well I guess do whatever you want to your car...for me I take care of my 32K investment..... Just do not be surprised when $hit hits the fan on your tranny

You still do not understand. Do you think that a clutch is made to slip at 3-5krpms? You keep doing what you want though, I am done trying to explain this to someone so unreceptive. You keep doing what you are doing since it is your money cough*parents*cough but you should be ready to fix it long before most people have to fix it.
Mom bought it, mom will fix it. I guess all of us who've owned/raced/driven WRXs and been on i-club for the past several years don't know what we're talking about. We're all a bunch of morons who haven't learned how to drive a manual transmission with a honda hatch si civic like some other people.

The one thing I haven't seen mentioned is that dropping a clutch on a two wheel drive car will allow you a little forgiveness... you will just do a burnout... especially on a front drive vehicle. Try that on a 4WD and you have another story. The engine is making enough stink to do a burnout but when all FOUR tires find purchase on the tarmac what do you have? It is like jambing a broom handle into the spokes of a bicycle that is being ridden. You have the driveline in between the engine and tires with adhesion and there eventually is going to be a weak link..... the drive line. The momentum of the engine isn't enough to overcome the inertia and friction with the street.

DUDE: take it easy..... I get on my car on a daily basis.....but I dont launch at every stoplight..... I would only do that if I was in a serious race with someone...other than that I have nothing to prove to everyday traffic...... the car is fast enough for me to enjoy...and if you NEED to have sub 5 second launches at every stoplight because it makes you happy...then do it.....just don't
throw a B!tch fit when your $hit starts to break ok???

I'm a little late to the party, but I read the whole thread and didn't see ANY other suggestions on launching the car. just a bunch of lectures on wearing out your tranny.
I think if a guy is interested in getting a faster launch, give him the benefit of the doubt that he realizes his car isn't going to last as long as if he started at 1500k every time.
Anyways, launching the wrx isn't easy. Too much slip will cook your clutch, not enough will bog you out.. and you can't "drop it", please whatever you do don't drop your clutch.. there is way too much traction on the road for your wheels to spin so when you drop your clutch all of that energy gets absorbed by your drive train, tranny, axels.. ouch ouch OUCH!
1st gear
clutch all the way down
gas all the way down
when your rpms reach 3000 you should have full boost
let the clutch out until it starts gripping
if your doing good the taq slows down but you didn't loose any rpms, should be around 3500 now
let the clutch out slowly as you goto 4000,4500,5000
by 5k you should be fully engaged and flying
shift, your done with 1st at 5k
lean over and hit your hazards before the muscle car you just launched on catches up to you and smokes your ***

Downshift, my Dad bought me my WRX and I learned stick on my previous '93 SE-R. I've been driving stick for almost 5 years and would never abuse my WRX like that. Why would you want to put so much strain on your new car for absolutely no good reason? Don't get me wrong, I drive my car hard. It sees 4-5k, sometimes even 6k daily (I rarely launch it though). But to launch your car constantly and put that much force on your clutch and transmission is crazy. Remember, you aren't driving a FWD Civic Si anymore. The WRX has AWD and it has a ton more torque. The pressure that is placed on the clutch and transmission is much more immense than on a car with less than 100 lb-ft of torque at just the front wheels. Just thought I'd put my two sense in, but in the end it's still your car. Do what you think is right.
Oh, and don't take this to mean that I don't know how to launch my ride. Because I damn well do.

okay gordy thanks for ur post...good info man :-)...how else can u launch the car? id like to hear ways that put more stress onthe clutch and less(none) on the tranny...better to replace a a clutch than a tranny...anyone got any info on that?
