dang, I misread this and thought it was going to be talking about Skyline GT-R R32's.
Imagine my disappointment when it was just a VW.

the r32 has much potential. though it is heavy, a lot of that has to do wiht the "luxury" of the car. ever close a late model golf or gti door, sounds like you just closed the door of a $40000 BMW. the feel of vw is very nice. i was very much impressed with the r32 that i got to sit in at this years New Dimensions Charity Show (ND is a VW/Audi tuner shop owned by my friends uncle). If i had the money to throw around to tune a car, i believe the r32 would be a great platform to start with. may not have a TON of out of box performance, but there is a lot of tuning potential.

not everyone buys a car for pure performance
the R32 is a car that does a lot of different things well
it look clean, luxurious, great interior, performs well, and overall finish is great
it isnt marketed to compete with WRX's or STI or Evo's in performance
if you really wanted pure performance for drags, you wouldnt have bought a WRX anyway !!
you would have bought yourself a Z28 SS or something for low $20k and dropped 5k in that thing and you would easily have a low 12 sec car .. possibly 11's.
you bought a WRX for a reason, it fit your preference
so when you think of a R32, think of where it fits people's preference

First of all, as the name implies, I drive a 2001 Audi A4 1.8T. To clarify, the 2001+ 1.8T engines have 170 HP stock. When I bought this car it was between the A4 and a WRX. I will say, as all of you with WRXs know, that it is definately a fun car to drive. Maybe my car is slower, which it is, but I didn't buy it for that reason. I thought, well, sure its fun to drive the WRX fast and whatnot, and my car is ok to drive fast too. I decided though that in the end, in 5 years I would still be able to enjoy driving my car just because it is a comfortable car. So there is indeed a different mindset when you buy an Audi/VW.
I'll also say, if you are going to talk about the performance of the R32, you probably should research it better. The potential of that car is outstanding. It is also a beautiful car, with the impecable styling, comfort, and good performace stock all mixed into one it is a great car. Sure, just as expensive of a car as the Evo or STi, and not quit as fast in a straight line, but look at the good things about it too.
Like I said, I almost bought a WRX, but I'm not going to lie to myself and say that the WRX is the greatest looking car, the performance is why you buy a WRX. The R32 on the other hand, is a good looking car. There is much more interior comfort in the R32, nice styling on the dash, nice pedals, nice seats(you can even get leather!). What the R32 doesn't have in sheer off the line speed, it makes up for with the comfort of the drive.
But, rock on to all u subie fans, just don't hate on us fans of the 5 rings! Oh yeah, and the Forrester XT is toight!

As far as the R32 is concerned as a whole, its a very capable car.
About the only place a STOCK (including RE92s) WRX can hurt it is at the strip. Otherwise, that VW has excellent low to midrange torque, 225/40/18s, a well tuned suspension, and excellent throttle response (something I dearly, dearly miss in my WRX). Add a close ratio six speed to that and I'll put my bet on it vs. a standard WRX on any mountain road or racetrack. It doesn't weigh much more than a WRX either, at 3280 lbs. or so.
Modify a WRX up nicely, and you will equal it and surpass it. We all know that.
That R32 also comes with excellent interior appointments as well, better than the STi even.
To me, its made for a different market of people than us Sube owners. Heartwarming brand loyalty aside, its a superior car to a bone stock WRX. Conversely an STi will leave it for dead, as will an EVO. To me, its like an STi with a Forester XT engine in it. With leather of course.

I briefly looked into a Golf GLS before getting my Impreza. The interior was very nice but I was appaled at the reliability ratings from Consumer Reports and some of the first hand user experiece with common problems (specifically electrical issues, problems with power windows etc). Friends of mine have had major issues along the same lines with other VW models too, such as my friend with her 2000 Jetta. The final straw for me against the Golf was hearing how poorly run many VW dealers are. Again, I'm sure there are some that are great and very friendly, but in my research I read alot of complaints about VW of America dealers. All of that was enough for me to deep six the idea of a Golf pretty quickly. For a small inexpensive car though, the Golf has a great interior. Very upsccale for sub 20k car. One of the few areas where I'll wholeheartidly say the Golf is better.

Just wanted to chime in real quick. I wrecked my 337 GTI in november. I've been a long time VW/Audi guy. I've always liked the WRX, so after my car GTI was paid off from the insurance company I bought my new Wagon. I will tell you this. With just a chip in my little 1.8t. I could beat any stock WRX easy. I'm not saying WRX's are slow. My wagon could beat a chipped FWD GTI/Jetta off the line any day, and WRX's are much cheaper to modd and go quicker(not faster). If any of you had any experiance launching a 1.8T, you would know it's very hard to master. I could easily spin into 3rd with 18's and sticky mich, pilots. The R32 wasnt meant to destroy the STI. We all know the STI nad evo are faster. But did you know theye are several R32's that go over 200 mph with a stock interiors(only stage 2 from HPA(and they have stage 4)? And idle better than stock. It may cost much more money to mod an R32 but it has massive, massive gains to be had.It can out brake any stock 911 variant with it's stock brakes. Yes it's only 240 hp. In all shoot outs in germany and most of europe it only lost to the STI and EVO in straight line acceleration. If you don't care for VW's or Audis thats fine. Lots of people hate the looks of the WRX(which I love). I'll admit VW's are not the best 1/4 mile cars.
But they havn't ever brought an awd turbo golf out here. That may change soon when the MK 5's come out.
In fact I think Subaru's have alot in common with VAG. They both have their cult like followings, and ther seems to be alot of"ethusiasts" among both brands. Both have a strong rally heriatage also. I've seen alot of ricey WRX's that make me cringe too, on the other hand I've seen a lot of stuck up a-holes thinking Audi A4's are gods chariots. And also VW's hit 9 secons in the late 70's(maybe early 80's) in the old school beetles, and gasp they were boxer engines. V-dub entusiasts tend to have more respect for other cars, than some teen whos parents bought him his WRX, because he heard they where fast (and furious yo).
