i have seen it done in a new Sti ,but what about drifting in this impreza?
If you want a car for drifting, any AWD Subaru is the wrong choice. Think about it - why did Subaru equip their entire USDM product line with AWD? It's a selling point because it offers superior traction in most conditions compared with rear or front-drive. Think about this, also - if you go to sanctioned drift events, why is it that the most competitive cars are not AWD?

Sure, there are ways to disable the power flow to the front wheels to make a Subaru rear-drive, but this makes even less sense than buying an AWD car for drifting in the first place.

If looking cool and drifting the tail out around corners is what entertains you, I suggest getting or building another sylvia. Hell, even an old 5 liter Mustang GT would make a better drift car than a WRX.

I think there is an online importer that will legalize S15s for you.
Although i think it runs for around $20,000 or so.

my next project! my dream is to make a 92 5.0 lx drift machine that rules on tantalus. Sylvia, if u love drifting that much to want to make a subaru your next machine of choice then by all means do it. but it almost takes the car out of character. but then again cusco made a rear wheel drive. . . so why not right?
if you do it though keep in mind that it will not be cheap.

Subarus can be drifted, though the speed you will need to enable a good drift will be substantially greater than in a RWD car because you're basically overpowering the front wheels with speed. Maybe that's not accurate but the point is: it can be drifted but a RWD car will be easier to learn on and overall easier to drift.

My WRX can drift around turns, but that's only with tires that have poor grip (either low-speed rated and skinny like the stock RE92 tires or worn out high-speed rated due to age) and with a fairly high and perhaps dangerous speed.

I'm very much getting into drifting and was turned onto the sport soon after getting this WRX...so I'm actually doing the opposite of you and looking to trade the subaru for a nissan RWD car, maybe 240sx cause I think it's sexy. BUT the WRX is overall much better than an old nissan in all aspects, though the drifting is what you really want to be doing. good luck!!

bankman, you totally hit the nail on the head!!
To be frank, I've only seen a handful of Imprezas drift on tarmac before (on Hot Version and Video Option). It wasn't fast, it wasn't pretty, and the only comment Drift King Tsuchiya Keiichi could give was, "Wow, he's drifting in an Impreza Sportwagon... interesting..." This Impreza owner was up against an S15 K's, S14 K's, FC3S Turbo, Lan Evo V (dunno why this guy entered either ), AE86 Corolla Levin, and one other car. The S15 completely 0wN3D everybody, and the two AWD cars came in butt-last. Now what do those results say?
Conversely, the Impreza and Lan Evo completely 0wN other cars on the dirt; their enhanced AWD traction is perfect for performing such joyful rally moves as Scandanavian flicks and celebratory donuts On the road, the Impreza should be built for grip driving; to make a drift would be difficult, expensive, and essentially pointless.
I'm not trying to be mean here (I think I may be sounding that way), but I just wanted to tell you upfront how an Impreza is.

Now if I were to build a drift car, I'd start with a lightweight AE86 and engine swap a 30b Rotary from a Mazda Eunos Cosmo in
With correct tuning, it can produce over 400 horsepower in a 2500lb car bwahahahaha!!!
If you think I'm crazy talking, well, they're a nutjob in Japan running this set-up right now
