Exhibition of speed?!
Ok, so im following my friend in his 95 bmw and he goes through a yellow light. I stop @ the light and let him go ahead i know i can catch up . So this light is taking forever and it finally turns green. I hit the gas and get up to 35(the posted speed limit) pretty quick, mind u I didnt peel out. And there, hiding behind a bush out of sight is a motorcycle cop. He proceeds to pull me over and hand me a ticket for exhibition of speed...$295!! When I ask what the ticket means considering i didnt peel out or break the speed limit he says that my acceleration was to the point where it was showing off, thus the exhibition of speed. Has anyone ever heard about this kind of a ticket??? Should i figght it or just let it go? let me know-

I would fight it just because it is a judgement call on the officer. You could say that you were just driving normally and he singled you out or something. I think since there is probably a pretty vague rule of what is exhibition you could get it thrown out. You may just be able to say that since it is a sports car and you are a kid(?) he was profiling you or something. Just my thoughts.

bull.
are you in cali? if so, you might want to read this. it's a bit long.
exhibition of speed
the relevant part:
23109. (a) No person shall engage in any motor vehicle speed
contest on a highway. As used in this section, a motor vehicle speed contest includes a motor vehicle race against another vehicle, a clock, or other timing device.
(b) No person shall aid or abet in any motor vehicle speed contest
on any highway.
(c) No person shall engage in any motor vehicle exhibition of
speed on a highway, and no person shall aid or abet in any motor
vehicle exhibition of speed on any highway.
i couldn't find a fixed definition of 'exhibition of speed' anywhere. like stephen said, you could point out the vagueness. and you weren't in a 'speed contest.' good luck!

You are so unlucky...
did you rev while you were waiting the light?
that'll be considered exhibition of speed too.
fight it at the court, I'm pretty sure judge will give you a break.

the exhibition of speed charge is one that they tend to throw at people on top of speeding tickets, or when the cop can't come up with something better to hit you with. bikes get them for pulling wheelies since there isn't a 'thou shalt not pull wheelies' law in the motor vehicle code. i'd think that if you didn't get a speeding ticket along with it, you'd be able to beat it in court.

Thanks, I live in Oregon, but I think the laws read the same, the other charge that he put on me was a $77 ticket for illegal sound amplification. He said he could have given me a different ticket as well for my BOV being too loud. I didnt feel like arguing with him at the time so i dropped fighting it but I am going to fight it in court.

It probably was profiling. I used to get pulled over almost weekly when I was 17. I got an unsafe start ticket when I didn't even spin the tires.
I'd definately say fight it in court. Around me those tickets are a lot of points. Look over the ticket too for any mistakes the cop may have made. They can be thrown out of court if anything is materially wrong.
Good Luck

Am I the only one who reads this thread and thinks "Damn, a 17 year old with a WRX and another 17 year old with a 95 BMW?"
When I was 17 I was driving a '93 Ford Escort and I only replaced it with my Subaru last month!
