Those Klipsches look HOT, and good thing there's carpet in that room. They can be painfully bright but are truly awesome gear.

That Polk satellite/sub system is pretty nice and more than adequate for something like an apartment. It doesn't have the OOMF that I need from movies and music but they are very nice and far more than enough for some people.

So hey - who else has a Discman from 1989 as their audio source? No one? Haha...

SO TRUE!!! But holy CRAP can they get loud. We were on the third floor and would go a couple hundred feet away in the parking lot and listen to them. Still sounded good.

I'm getting my Uncle's 1970's La Scalla's next year after I graduate and move back home. That's what I'm really looking forward to.

 

I still have a DiscMan from that generation that still works as well (though it's not really used anymore.) Does yours also have a remote and an add-on brick of a battery pack? It was my Dad's and I couldn't see throwing it away when they moved to socal. It always cracked me up that a "portable" device had a remote, a huge screen, and a battery back at least 50% of the size and weight of the main body itself.

 

now I'LL be really impressed if any of you have a DCC player...

DCC is digital compact cassette or something like that, right?

I don't have a DCC but I do have a functioning Sony MD player/recorder circa 1997. Still have a few mix MD's with music on them that really date the player (Maya, etc.)

BTW, I got an Xbox 360 HDDVD add-on yesterday against your better advise. They had the 6 free HDDVD deal on it and free shipping from Amazon, so I just couldn't say no. Watched Transformers on it last night, which was pretty sweet. Now I just need to hope HDDVD wins, or at the minimum, dual format players become more affordable.

 

yes, that's what DCC is...

somehow, in the late 80s early 90's people got weird...

the nice thing about it was it was backwards compat with analog casette tapes.

sony had their MINIDISC (go ahead... start laughing).

so the battle for the next gen user recordable DIGITAL format was DCC vs the MINIDISC.

but RIAA got their little grubby hands on everything. requiring fees to be added to everything.

plus, people didnt feel like spending 3 figures for a device that they had already.

fortunately, DCC died a fast horrible death.

MINIDISC? well sony refuses to let that die... lol...


FWIW, i remember going to a sony launch of the MINIDISC eoooooons ago. i failed at the ATRAC test.

 

I had a Sony DAT Walkman but got rid of it. I still have 1 of my old MD players and use it at least weekly. I have a good amount of friends who spin and I record off their decks and such, then play it back later or make CD's.

That Discman in the pic is a D-555, dual Burr Brown DAC's, Optical TOSlink, DSP (worthless for the most part) and a rock solid chassis/transport. I also have a D-303 which is my fav (has the best sounding analog output I have heard), a D-311, D-9 and D-321 which I use daily at my desk at work. So far I have not found anything that reproduces sound like these old things. A D-555 sold last year for over $600. That is rare, but they often bring over $250 on eBay.

I know, I saw a post about that on AVSforum. Luckily, although I watch Heroes on TV "live", I don't really like the show enough to want to own it and re-watch it. I guess I could have sold it on sleazebay. Oh well, if you always wait for the potential next best deal, you'll never own anything. That's what I'm telling myself to make this better anyway.

Here's a home theater I setup for work during my spare time. Sort of a project on the side. Done a few years back during the 04 World Series with the Bosox winning. Was an ATSC HD feed which looked great on the projector + htpc.

question for you guys... flat panel TV that is not wall mounted. do you anchor it in case of an earth quake or something to prevent it from tipping over?

if so what did you use?

 

yes mine is anchored to the stand. It came with the tv.
