well, discussing the costs of plane tickets to Mexico to catch next years only North American rally is pretty on-topic...sorta.
so, to get this thread back on track:

bye-bye, McRae! i guess he won't be driving for Citroen next season.
not only that, but look at what Sainz says about the championship hunt and Sebastian Loeb:
on the Peugot front, it looks like Gronholm is gunning for both Loeb and Panizzi in San Remo:
the article also mentioned that Gronholm has been testing the 206 on tarmac circuts to try and figure out where he looses the time on tarmac.
finally, one of my favortite co-drivers ever is going to be working for Subaru next year. Luis Moya is back! the whole story snipped from http://www.wrc.com
and just to satisfy any copyright *****, all the stories came from WRC.com and are copyright of WRC.com.

Carlos Sainz says he is extremely proud to be Citroen's second driver next season after Citroen announced last week that it was favouring the Spaniard over current team-mate Colin McRae.
not only that, but look at what Sainz says about the championship hunt and Sebastian Loeb:
Sainz is currently lying equal second in the drivers' championship with Petter Solberg, but the Spaniard reckons team-mate Loeb, 10 points behind pacesetter Richard Burns, will be the man in the money seat come the end of the season.
"I think this year Seb can be world champion – I honestly think it could be him as he is very quick on asphalt," he said. "I would like to fight with him for the rest of this year and next year. There will be some when he is in front and some when I am in front. It is important to have good rallies. That is why I am staying on next year."

Asphalt expert, and Gronholm's Peugeot team-mate, Gilles Panizzi often goes karting to hone his tarmac skills. The Frenchman has won the Sanremo for the past three years.

Subaru has appointed former World Champion co-driver, Luis Moya, as its Sporting Director.
Moya was Carlos Sainz's co-driver for 14 years until he retired at the end of last season. Subaru team boss David Lapworth says Moya has "the perfect blend of hands-on experience, strategic know-how and enthusiasm" and enjoys a first class reputation with drivers and teams alike.
"Rallying has always been my passion," said Moya. "Since I left the co-driver's seat at the end of the 2002 season, I've been thinking carefully about other opportunities within the sport. For me, Subaru is the most prestigious team in the WRC, and the opportunity to work as part of their management team, especially at such a dynamic and exciting time, is just perfect."_
Working with Team Principal David Lapworth and Team Manager Paul Howarth, Moya will join Subaru in time for the start of the San Remo rally on 3 October. His main areas of responsibility will be driver management, event strategy, and managing the team's relationship with the FIA.
"Anyone who knows Luis will tell you he's an inspirational and charismatic figure," said Lapworth. "With Solberg, Burns and the ongoing development of the Impreza, 2004 looks set to be one of the most exciting seasons our team has known, but it also promises to be one of the most fiercely competitive. Luis is an excellent team motivator, and with him on board, coupled with the skill of our other key managers, I believe no-one can match our new team's passion and expertise."

Nicky Grist does an absolutely wicked impersonation of Moya reading pace notes, it's a real riot. personally, i think Moya is one of the coolest co-drivers tha the sport has ever seen. so many times, i've thought about making a CD with nothing but him reading pace notes to drive to.
oh yeah, and i'd kill to see a video of Panizzi and Gronholm racing arround Peugot's parking lot in karts!

Moya speaks his pace-notes so fast. Nicky last year when talking about him said you would not beleive the detailed desciptions he uses in his notes. I only wish i understood spanish so i could follow along. Right now it just sounds like. "Blalalbelalla Uno Blalllallallalallalla Sette blalallallalalllal Otto."

my favorite Moya-ism is:
uno blablablala MAAAAAAAS!
a buddy of mine is fluent in spanish, and sat down to watch a rally with me once. apparently Moya's pace notes are pretty unique and the content is radically differant than say Mill's or Grist's delivery. i forget exactly what he was saying, but it wasn't your standard "slight right, don't cut to fast right five, keep right over crest" type deal.

No Hyundai in 2004 WRC
A probable come-back for the Korean constructor in 2006 [17/09/03 - 15:47]
Only a few more rallies left
for the official Hyundai team:
Hyundai will not take part in the 2004 World Rally Championship. The Korean team will complete the rallies in 2003 and then it will stop to better prepare a come back in a few years, a little bit like Mitsubishi is doing at the moment.
The lack of results and the numerous reliability problems encountered by Hyundai this season were not very positive for the team. The high-cost of the sport is possibly another element that influenced their decision to leave WRC competition.
There is also a contractual dispute between Hyundai and Milton Keynes-based Motorsport Developments Limited (MSD), the company that prepares the Accent, mostly for private customers. "MSD is in a contractual dispute with Hyundai Motor Corporation and until such time as this dispute is settled, we have decided to send the staff home," confirmed Ellie Storey of MSD. "We hope to have a solution soon."

my guess is that Schwaz won't be getting a WRC drive for next year, unless Mitsubishi picks him up. with Allister and Colin McRae without drives, and lots of hot young guns coming up, i don't see any way of Schwarz scoring a drive with anyone else. damn, where are Toyota and Audi when you really need them?

I'd also like to see Renault join the WRC with the new Renault sport Clio. Them, and as we've said before Mini Copper with a great bmw motor.
Great drivers come and go all the time. Like Francios Delecour. Not the greatest but he had a lot of heart. Remember several years ago when Pinizzi was killing him in Corsica? Delecour was crying with anger. He couldn't believe how fast Gilles was and Peugeot was asking him to stand down and not challenge Panizzi.

having both Renault and BMW join the WRC would make my day, big style. the Clio is a V6, and i think it displaces 3.0 liters, so it wouldn't be legal under the current rules. bring out a turbocharged 2.0 liter version in the mid-engine configuration and they'd be set.
i don't think that there is another car that i'd like to see come to the WRC more than the new mini. mini's used to rally way back in the day, when volvo still ran rallies. bring out a Cooper Rally edition with a 2.0 liter turbo four and all wheel drive, and it'd eat Peugots for lunch if it had factory backing and a good driver. hell, bring out a street version and i'd buy one in a heartbeat.
one other car that would be great to see in rally, just to get an american company involved, would be the SRT-4. i know, i know -- it's a dodge and a neon. i personally don't particularly care for them. however, if they brought out and AWD version and ran it in the SCCA and WRC, it might add some US fans to the WRC fan base. it sure couldn't hurt...
if i recall, Peugot wanted Delecour to kinda stand down because they were worried that he'd crash out chasing Panizzi. a reasonable concern for sure, considering Panizzi's speed on tarmac.

What about a nostalgia rally series? Bring back some of the great rally machines of the past like they do with AA/FA's in the nostalgia drag races that are quickly becoming so popular?
I'd love to see an old Lancia Delta S4 duelling an Audi Quattro. They'd be updated for modern safety and maybe detuned a bit...
